Site Rebranding: Clever Motivation to 3 Step Motivation

Look forward to exciting stuff in the coming weeks πŸ™‚

Why I am re-branding from “Clever Motivation” to “3 Step Motivation”:

When the site was Clever Motivation, people asked me, “WTF Frank, what does that even mean“? Especially those on 3 Step Motivation’s Facebook Fanpage. (If you haven’t liked the page, what are you waiting for? πŸ˜‰ )

I had a huge brainstorm session with some friends, and eventually settled on “3 Step Motivation”, which illustrates what all the content I was uploading was centered around. “Actionable steps to gaining the motivation you need to finding and pursue your passions“, paying forward what I had learned.

In the coming weeks, I will be re-branding the site, and adding content more in line with the above statement.

After the break is my story as toΒ  why I started 3 Step Motivation:

Growing up in a traditional Chinese family, my parents had laid out a roadmap for what they felt was important for me to achieve in life: do well in school, get good grades, go to a recognizable university, get a good job, have a nice family, buy a house. I came to the eventual realization that this was a very limited life and that life could be much broader:

I remember being in grade 11 and 12 of high school, not having a clue as to what I wanted in life, and less about how I was going to get it. So when it came time to pick a faculty to apply for in university, I had no idea. I knew that I enjoyed two things: technology and business, so that helped narrow my choices down to Computer Science and Business. I took a course in grade 12 on programming, bombed it, and realized I disliked debugging and learning code, that’s when I decided on Business.

I started at Simon Fraser University’s Business Program, commuting 3 hours each day but couldn’t justify the commute, which lead to my eventual decision to transfer to UBC’s Sauder School of Business in my 2nd year (“half the commute time” win!).

I also did not seek out guidance for what I wanted, because I was stuck in the mindset of graduating in 4 years, and “not wasting” time and money taking more courses than was required to, and naively used my elective courses to get “easy” marks instead of exploring courses in different disciplines.

Fortunately, through my hobbies, I discovered that what I enjoyed most about business: How multi-billion dollar behemoth corporations like Apple or Microsoft could function (well for Microsoft that’s questionable…), and how businesses made money. I was fascinated by operational processes, and how great leaders lead.

During my university days, I had a few accounting student friends who were working for public accounting firms. As much as they expressed their frustrations and the grueling grind doing their CaSB (CA School of Business) training modules, their work experience through internships intrigued me.

I decided at the end of 2nd year, to pursuing accounting and the CA designation.

Going through the entire process of being lost and finding what I wanted in life, looking back at everything so far, I can say with a bit more certainty some of the things that would have benefited me to know in making my career and life decisions.

In the coming weeks, I will be presenting this information to you.
