As I’ve been reading the various arguements that violent video games cause (or increase the risk) for violence, it brought me back to the basics of correlation vs. causation from my undergrad science classes. I found a great cartoon (not sure if I’d violate copyright by posting it so I did not) that describes a similar debate with respect to vaccinations “causing” autism. the cartoon depicts 2 children have autism, both of whom had immunizations, with the conclusion that A + B must = C. using the same logic, the cartoon depicts two children with autism who also had teddy bears, and the erroneous conclusion that teddy bears therefore cause autism. As much as I’d like to conclude that violent video games cause aggression in the real world (this fits nicely with my view of the nature nurture question) these two may just co-exist, or perhaps teddy bear ownership causes violence.
