  1. The first work I would like to comment on is Viki’s week3 assignment, Pixels of the Real. I found this work pretty interesting in its way of combining two different atmospheres into one single space. For instance, the busy street view at the background and the peaceful bed in the foreground create a contrastive but at the same time harmonious effect, especially through the interactive warm colours, which overall attracts me in an enjoyable way.

Moving on to the next work from Cecilia Fan, it caught my attention with its bright and saturated colours at the first place. On the other hand, these unusual colour settings encourage me to think deeper about how they not only cover but also try to highlight the underneath pictures, which bring viewers enough imaginary spaces with the identities of characters as well as the hidden information of surroundings.

  2. Mariana’s piece ‘No Se’ is visually striking because of its simplicity. It is an image that can be processed gradually through the texture and seemingly uniform color palette. Most of her work so far makes inclusion of defined shape geometric shapes, something that resonates with me sine it gives an orderly, yet sharp individuality. ‘No Se’ reminds me of the comforting essence of construction sites and unfinished buildings.

Euiyoung’s ‘image of an image’, like Mariana’s work, incorporates elements or simplicity and order. Again, this is something I find particularly soothing and something that is successfully communicated through the use of soft red. Euiyoung’s use of symbols as a language is brilliant in the way both signs are juxtaposed. By looking at the entire collection of works in Euiyoung’s page, the use of text is very prominent and it contributes to the urban sense all of his works offer. I feel like I am in am unconventionally signaled city when I browse through Euiyoung’s page.

  3. Image: http://newhive.com/iris91/kaleidoscope
Comment: I really like how Cecilia used the objects around her in a way that flows together and makes a whole other image. It creates a full image that allows the viewer to observe the details of what makes up the image as well as what the whole image represents. The combination of these two make this a full image that compliments itself in both elements.

    Image: http://newhive.com/beaosorio/diary-day-2
Comment: In Bea’s image the viewer immediately feels a sense of stress and anxiety of the over cluttered background which is exaggerated by the James Franco gif. This is an effective image in the use of multiple images to make the viewer feel the same feeling/emotion. We can easily see how technology comes into play in this image to add to the creation of emotion.

  4. http://newhive.com/pmrubio/manipulated-in-silvers
In Paula’s work Manipulated in silvers, juxtaposed 5 steel objects that I assume she uses in daily basis. She horizontally organized them and seeming based on the cornological orders that they appears in a day. The watch, she probably the first thing is the morning is to check the time on this watch. Then divider that she uses in class for math or painting. Not sure about the tool in the middle (to remove tooth?). A palette knife for painting. A fork obviously for food. These are some essential tools she uses daily (I assume). The background is also metallic colour which appears cold and harsh that matches with the tools.

    http://newhive.com/bridget/pixels-of-the-real
This piece is by Bridget. Similar to Paula’s work, but bridge shows more electric devices (or objects that powered by electricity) in this. A tooth brush, car, oven, fridge. With digital time showing beside and a real clock appears almost in the middle of the composition. All the objects are black and white, but the time is colourful. interesting.

  5. The first work I would like to comment on is Tiffany H’s assignment on Claire de Lune/Image of the Image ii. The link is: http://newhive.com/tiffanyhng/-mind-week-5-image-of-an-image-ii. I especially enjoyed this image at first as it gave me the sense of the crescendo-like nature of the song. There are moments that reflect a sense of delicacy and vulnerable, and moments of joy. The image by Tiffany makes me feel that same sense of wonder as the moving GIFs of the clouds and the falling snow can reflect that same fragile balance between happiness and sorrow. After the discussion in class, I know realize how Tiffany’s use of moving pictures can really capture the image of the song well, as the piece itself is constantly changing.

The second work that I chose is Mariana’s assignment for Image of the Image, based upon our described image from Week 1. The link is: https://newhive.com/mmoreno/no-s. This image gives me the feeling of indifference, coldness, yet a feeling of wonder for the past. It is highly organized and linear, and easy to look at due to the grid nature and the sameness in colour. Reading into her description, I can grasp the feeling of her personal story being told in regards to the picture frame. I can feel that sense of curiosity of the past, and what could life be, through the qualities of the concrete that she chose.

  6. I picked two works from the Image of an Image I & II assignment. I really enjoyed the song and the ways in which my classmates interpreted them.

The first one I like is Jocelyn’s work:
    http://newhive.com/jey/claire-de-lune

I really like the vibe and the feeling that her images give to me. I’m not sure what she was trying to represent but I feel the excitement and joy and love through her images and I think she did a great job adding the sound to it. I can totally relate the background with the GIF in feeling the wind coming through the window and the fur like motion of the girl… All of these has made this work enjoyable for me.

The second work I like is Rolling’s work:
    https://newhive.com/rollingchen/claire-de-lune

I particularly like this work because it is somehow close to how I feel about the song. I can’t say it is really just a sad song for me. I can see the “lights in the darkness”. There is a part of me that is very positive, dreamy, and peaceful when hears this song and the other part is sad but calm and with no sign of joy or happiness to it. I think the image is so close to how I feel about this song.

  7. I don’t know whether or not my interpretation meets the artists’, but I guess everyone has different feelings about the same picture.

    https://newhive.com/tiffanyhng/diary-feb-10-2017
I can really read the the feeling of doing the same thing everyday like a machine through this work. The music on the other hand is quite energetic which gives me a sense of getting tired of everyday life and hope that can change it. The meaningless sentence fragments makes me think of me that trying to do everyday work without even notice what exactly I am doing with lol. Sometimes when I was extremely bored with my work and studying I am really like doing thing in “machine mode” and finished everything without thinking.

    https://newhive.com/rollingchen/thu-feb16-6pm
This one I really like the feeling of forest and fog. It makes me feel peace and quiteness, also lonelyness which I usually enjoy. Those pair of hands remains me of “escaping from city to the forest.” I enjoy watching this picture and everything it gives me. It creates some kind of dream word that I really want to run into.

  8. The first work I want to comment is https://newhive.com/mmoreno/diary-sunday. This image attracts me because of its mystery and strong power. The totally black background with many flashing constellations that move around makes me think of how mysterious the universe is. There are so many things that are unknown and still need us to explore. Compared to the universe, human seems to be tiny and powerless. However, the large globe that stands out in the middle of the image shows how beautiful and amazing the place where we live is. It stands out in thousands of planets because its uniqueness and brilliant human civilization. As we can see from the image, the ocean and cloud is moving around the earth. Also, the monochromatic color gives me a feeling of melancholy. The most interesting part is the Earth that disappear and re-appear in arc shape, which inspire me to connect lots of phenomena together. One of them is that the Earth is moving around the sun, the part get the sunlight is in the day and the rest part is in night. The Giphy shows the process how day and night shift and how time flies. We experience our life through time but the universe is eternal and it doesn’t change.

The second artwork I would like to comment is http://newhive.com/iris91/saturday. This is a still image but I feel a tendency of motion when I see it because of the way it is placed and duplicated. The building get warped and spin around to form a pattern looks like a flower if it seen from a distance. The original object is changed and manipulated to compose another new object. To me, it looks like a gear and also a snail. And the cold color gives me a metal and mechanic feeling. The interesting part is the buildings can be changed into a pattern that still looks harmonious and has an amazing visual effect.

  9. http://newhive.com/vik123/day-2
I really like Viki’s day 2 of the journal assignment. I really like how the two images compliment each other especially in terms of the alignment of what appear to be “hands” in both of the images. I feel like the connection that the two image have is really interesting as it creates new meaning as you see them together.

    https://newhive.com/rollingchen/mon-feb13-9pm
I also really like the overall look of this one, both aesthetically and how the artist has chosen to juxtapose these two images together to convey an emotion. What I’m getting from this image is a sense of overwhelmed or fatigue base on the body language of the figure as well as the scale of the figure compared to the books. I also find that the lines and the curves of both images seem to blend together creating a meaning of being consumed by the books or being overwhelmed by them.

  10. https://newhive.com/smartlauren/on-a-tuesday
I really enjoyed Lauren Smart’s Tuesday submission for the “diary” project. I liked the way she incorporated the vivid colors, funky music, and icons to give the work a trippy vibe. The colors and the movements of the gifs/background blend together really well. It reminds me of early 90s culture with the bright colors and the trendy patterns.

    https://newhive.com/mmoreno/thursday
Mariana Moreno’s Thursday submission for the “diary” project is the quintessence of a bad day turned for the worst. The way the smoke runs through the figure and the error pop-ups remind me of how frustrating it can be when everything goes wrong. I think the glitch at the bottom adds to the novelty of the experience – intensifying the irritation of the issue being dealt with.

  11. I would like to comment on Mariana’s work – “Tuesday” (http://newhive.com/mmoreno/tuesday). I absolutely love it! The action (and its fading away effect) & the music convey a relaxed, lazy, unwinding-after-a-long-day feel. The flashing “SLEEP” sign is hypnotizing. Drenched in simplicity (white background), this is a space that one can truly BE.

Another work I’d like to comment is “Wednesday” by Runtong (http://newhive.com/2345/wednesday). It guides the viewers to a chaotic state. It feels that one is stuck in endless repetition of negative/anxious emotions.

Both works are great for that they deliver FEELINGS. Thank you!

  12. 1) I am analyzing Bea’s assignment ‘pixels of the real’. The sound track playing in the background makes me feel nostalgic and peaceful. The sound track gives the image more meaning and makes it more personal. The composition of this image is also interesting as not all the objects are repeated, and are arranged in different sizes. The objects included in this image is more or less relatable to the viewer (coffee, shoes, iPhone, etc) as these are things/items that is a part of our daily lives.

    2) I am analyzing Jocelyn Tang’s assignment ‘The Image of the Image ii’. This image is inspired by Claire de Lune, and she has incorporated this soundtrack in the background which once again enhances the meaning and feeling when viewing this image. The background and the colour scheme makes me feel peaceful and calm, along with the GIF in the middle. The combination of the sparks and the forest give it a sense of adventure and excitement.

  13. http://newhive.com/jey/saturday
I really like this new hive. It’s trendy in the way it follows the A E S T H E T I C color schemes and the 90’s nostalgia. The Ouija board and tamagochi in this art references 90’s nostalgia. The color schemes of blue and pink keeps to the theme of A E S T H E T I C. One aspect that keeps away from the theme is its brightness. Most A E S T H E T I C art has a feeling of melancholy but this art is happier. This artwork makes me feel nostalgic and brings me to a happier time in my childhood.

    http://newhive.com/oliviaq/sunday
I love this new hive because this is EXACTLY how I feel when I go out on a sunny day. Different gifs of energetic and overly happy suns dance on the screen. The absurd number of suns emphasizes how important the sun is to happiness. I personally suffer from seasonal affective disorder and I can easily fall into depression if I don’t get enough sunlight. When I go out on a cloudless sunny day, I feel ecstatic and uncontrollably energetic. The sun warms my skin, my vision gets tinted with vivid colors and my mood gets uplifted. This artwork perfectly encapsulates my love for a sunny day.

  14. The first work I want to comment on is https://newhive.com/smartlauren/fat-friday by Lauren, I could relate to the feelings of wanting something instantaneously. Because of the moving image of the french fries rolling down infinitely, it made me think of how we live in a society where we can get instant gratification, a craving can be filled with minimal effort (at least with those with the access to funds). I think that having the background be covered in the same gif of french fries, helped solidify my interpretation of ‘excess’. The distress on the person’s face of wanting “fried chicken”, made me laugh because it seems like such a trivial problem, almost like a complaint. I find myself guilty of from time to time from this same trivial complaint (but with other foods or things). I am not sure if that was the intention, to reflect on what we perceive as problems today or maybe to reflect a more primal need for food (albeit a specific food). I like that this work isn’t trying to convey a morality in an abrupt way because it made me reflect and wonder what the images together were trying to convey. I like that the images work together to create a new meaning rather than be didactic.

The second work that I want to comment on is http://newhive.com/beaosorio/diary-day-2 by Bea, I really enjoyed this image because immediately I got a sense of overwhelming stress. The massive face of James Franco clutching his head as if in confusion/anxiety/stress and the mass of files/screenshots in the background are what helped to create that feeling for me. When I took a closer look, all the files on the screen are screenshots (images) and it made me think of how sometimes I find that my mind becomes filled with information to the point of being overwhelmed. For me personally I connected with this image because I visually go over things in my head in moments rather than words that were said. The amount of information being displayed conveys a sense of lack of direction, if someone is faced with this task of decluttering the screen where would they begin? How would they be able to know what to keep and what to discard? This work raised questions for me that made me stay and look at the image longer.
