Who I am ?
I am Héloïse, 19. I’m from France but I lived in Chile the past two years.
Work and Goals
The media I use the most is video. I also work with photos. Out of the digital world, I work on textile (embroidery/ sewing).
I want to expand my video montage skills this year, work more with Photoshop and Illustrator. I’d like to get started in programming and coding (im interested in HTML and the use of the Processing software). I’d like to work on and with Typography and the importance of text in images.

I feel like i’ve been, without being aware of it, basing most of my learning on the lifelong learning concept. I’m glad this class will leave us autonomy. I’m really interested in digital arts and media and I feel that, because it’s always expanding, no one really has a perfect grip on what technology is. And the fact that this class is gonna be more conversations than magistral teaching is a adjusted way to talk about the subject of this class
The image I picked is a Polaroid of my 18th Birthday Party.
I like the format polaroid because of its an instant memory in your hand. And because of the price of the film you use it only to capture moments that are worth it.
It’s a group picture with my closest friends. I even got the ones that hate to be on pictures to appear on it.
In France, the majority age is on the 18th birthday. It was my last birthday in Chile, I finished high school and a few months later I left my family to start College. This basically meant that I had to start to worry about adult stuff. To balance that, I hosted a afternoon party like we had in elementary school, with candy bags at the end.
Everyone was pretty stressed about what was going to happen after summer, and this afternoon was a parenthesis. Everybody enjoyed themselves, met new people and ate hot dogs.
I don’t take a lot of pictures and when I do, I don’t keep them for a very long time. Finding a good picture for this assignment was pretty tricky. And I can see that a lot of you wrote a looooot about your pictures.
But there’s not a lot to sayabout my pictures. It’s just a really soft memory of joy and calm and sometimes you don’t need more than that
The theme of my image for Week 1 was Shelters, escaping stress and a return to childhood
I used the gif format because I wanted to work with that again. I changed the overall ambience of my first image that was calm and peaceful into something more abrupt, energetic and contrasted.
I used 2000’s looking glitter gifs to suggest childhood and a concrete accumulation to suggest stress. I like the contrast between the colors and fluffiness of the cotton candy and the gifs and the sharpness of the concrete.
1. “Furthermore, it can no longer be solely attached to a camera-based activity, typical of a certain discourse of photography (including street photography, for instance) since now the act of making, manipulating, distributing and ‘digesting’ pictures is hybridized by devices like mobile phones and computers but, also, glasses (Polaroid), TV sets, game consoles and so on.”
I find really interesting the divergence of media in every type of art genre/subdivision. Photography took a different turn when we understood that numeric and analogic cameras weren’t the only thing we could use.
I love pictures and videos using thie webcam medium. Its still being explored but some artists make a great use of that. It gives instantly an impression of intimacy, impulsivity or voyeurism.
“There’s no public sphere without the sharing of experiences and opinions, and in our age what we share the most is images. They have become a commodity. We trade our existence in images, and we shape ourselves through them.”
Images are easy to use and to understand.
a picture is worth a thousand words – Confucius
In a world where everything has to be fast, an image is more efficient to transfer an idea.
“If today the important element is not ‘what’ information but ‘how’ information is delivered, then it is essential to understand the forms of communication that bring us information.”
The use of photography in our commons lives created a new way of checking source and believing informations. Now that we know that pictures can be modified and distort.
With the internet, source checking is crucial because anyone can make and spread an information
2. I choose to work on the website http://www.shutterstock.com, an image database where you can buy the copyrights of an image and use it freely however you want.
Shutterstock is interessting in the sense where most of there image are created in the unique goal to be bought. So they try to create bland images suitable for a lot of purposes. But some of them are slightly off and create a weird feeling watching them. They are immediately recognizable because of the rhythm, odd lightning and over acted expressions.
A lot of web artists use those images to create videos or photomontages. Their weirdness is know wildly known and appreciated. They work as a language themselves.
