The Image of the Image II
Assignment:
Create a visual image from the song Claire de Lune
Comments:
This is a variation on our previous exercise. They have in common the approach: we are ‘translating’ one image into another. The difference is that here, you are starting from a translation, from someone else’s image, in this case, a song. In other words, you are being told about certain experiences which you have now to discern of rather feel through that image (the song) and turn into visuals.
What are the feelings and experiences from Claire de Lune?
Is it about love, beauty, sadness, pain, loneliness, happiness?
What are the colors, shapes, forms in it?
Consider creating your work in Newhive. Unlike other image sharing sites, Newhive was created with artists in mind and as such offers capabilities you will not find in any other platform. It is very simple to use and at the same time is very versatile. More importantly, as an artist-oriented website, it is also a great environment to test yourselves and learn from others.
Please refer to the help section for information about the tools. Also make sure you spend time exploring the works there. They all reflect a very contemporary sensibility and a good understanding of the specifics of contemporary images.
Remember that in office hour are Tuesdays 1- 3 pm.

I think your video is different than what I initially think of when I hear the song, and i love that! I think your video is really thought provoking and forces us to think of the song in different ways.
I like your video! It actually surprises me that the soft song and those collapse scenes match so well and naturally that they didn’t give me a wired sense. The strong contrast between the two makes me think about another kind of beauty—the beauty of destruction or the cruel destroy beauty, The destruction is sort of beauty since it brings forth a new order, a new form of life. As what Yeats calls “terrible beauty”.
I find this piece very interesting because it is quite different from the initial feelings I get from Claire de Lune. I perceive the song as being very delicate and soft, while the clips in your video suggest a significant loudness and heaviness. However, although there is this stark contrast present, the song really works with your video. I think the softness of the song elevates the content of the clips to make a deeper meaning emerge from the work. Thank you for making this piece!
I like this video so much and I think it related to the theme really. The collapse of the building provides something associated with our mental map.
I like you video. It shows the beauty in destruction. Destruction can be beautiful, too.
Is anyone else still having issues with Newhive?

Let’s see if this works..
It doesn’t work. It doesn’t keep anything that you upload…. I’ll try and figure out something else.

This is the best I could do to show what I made on Newhive. I couldn’t hide my sidebars and it doesn’t have audio.
Thanks for trying though Katherine. Is so strange that it seems to work just fine for me. The mysteries of Technology!!!
We will work out other options on Wednesday
The continuous, successive dancing gesture just like the song.
Your piece really captures the delicateness of Claire de Lune. Your work also conveys a sort of antiquity (or “from the past” kind of essence) that I also feel while listening to the song. I think it is also interesting how the ballerina in the video is constantly performing the same move – it creates a sort of balance and peacefulness which I also feel when listening to Claire de Lune. Thanks for making this piece!
Thanks for the feedback. I love hearing what people think about my work.

This image really captures the feelings that I associate with Claire de Lune, such as lightness, softness, and delicateness. I also don’t feel that the image is completely “happy” or “sad”, but somewhere in between, which aligns with how I feel about Claire de Lune. For these reasons, I really appreciate this image.
I really love your picture! It gives off such a delicate and crisp vibe that I totally get from listening to the song.
I love the movement that the transparency effect in the photo incites- I see much of what I feel from this song here, warmth, coldness, nostalgia, a memory… very well done
I associate this image with the things you do before you fall asleep. The things you think about, the thoughts you have, the confusion people feel towards life. All the unsolved things, and uncertainty you think about. Although there’s a lot of uncertainty, it’s still peaceful.
Week 5 – The image of the image
The Newhive is still not working for me, and here is the google link of my image:

Your use of the thick painterly style really keeps with the theme. Nice job.
Thank you so much : )
I am also unable to get NewHive working (though I have tried many times).
Here is my submission on Google Docs:

Personally, I really appreciate this image because I can see the subtle details and it reminds me of a word: delicate. The delicate color, delicate balance, etc.

I feel like the image could reflect on a human’s growth from being born to the death. And also, it may reflect on how human beings as a species progress through time and ages. With the soft music goes in the background, I begin to feel the process that how universe came into being and how creatures and civilization have developed.

I hope this works
Newhive is still not working for me, the image just will not show up. So I uploaded the image on google docs.

It provides me with the feeling of lonely, maybe because of the girl in the water. Also, the overall setting is in the sea which is blue. It is a sense of sorrow.
From listening to this song with the image on the sumnail, it evoked relaxed mood and the feeling of secure under the warmth of maternity. The slow and gradual rythm of the song and the contrast between soft light of yellow and darkness of the night remind me of the safeness of being under parental cares rather than the fear of danger or the feeling of insecureness. Completely coherent harmony of the song brings me into the quite but never-ending waves of the sleepiness as well as positive nothingness other than the existance of the moon. There are no sharpness of artificial construction but the curvy, rounded shaped waves and endless circles. It is pastel colored and more dominated by cool colors in which the back ground is blue or violet fogginess. On the other hand the focus point of the piece is clear contoured shapes.
I created a video but it looks like the hive stuff still isn’t working so I’ll just link to my google drive. When listening to the song, I felt calm, collected, warm, and for some reason lonely. Judging from the comments posted on the linked video version of the song, there was a strong connection with love and time. The song effected people differently, as it did for me on multiple listenings. To me the song is more about the unpredictability of love and life, so I tried to capture that with this video.

Every stroke is meeting every sound and beat of the song! As there are more and more strokes and lines, I can feel a kind of continuous, successive, prolonged sorrow, messy and complexity.
Here are a couple links to the “never ending song” websites!

Thanks so much for the response! I was definitely allowing the song to drive my creative process and I felt like it took me to a sad and complex place. Whats funny is the movement of the lines were completely random. I was using a new software I was experimenting with and once I drew my lines they just started moving haha. I was thinking about deleting them, but I almost felt like they were dancing to the music when I played it back so I left it in!
Also here are a couple websites for the “never ending song”

Newhive is not working for me as well, and thus I post the image on GoogleDoc.

I am interested in this image and it really connected with the theme. The couple are dancing under the moon, it is warm but with a sense of lonely. Most importantly, they are enjoyable, just like what the song expresses.

Wow, it’s cool but somewhat thrilling due to the darkness maybe. The music is gentle, comfort, and the video provides more complex meaning.
Well, since Newhive still isn’t working, I’m gonna use tumblr for now:

Also there should be sound for mine.
The subtlety works really well for this assignment.

It just the image in the front! The continuous, successive movements of dancing. However, what’s different is the background. The blue water surface, the flower and the hands holding the circle. These help the image to be more delicate with more information to tell. We always hold something we cherish.
I agree with people said that the image could reflect that there is something we need to cherish due to the halo behind the dancer. Halo in art history tends to relate to something holy and valuable.

I could edit and save my image in Newhive, but when I tried to see it as a visitor, it couldn’t be loaded.
The transparency element is used again here! The feeling of lonely, isolated, farewell (time to say goodbye).
uncertainty is peaceful
I like this pairing because I think the idea of 19th/20th century Europe- the train, the classical music, the old fashioned clothing- all has a very classic and romantic feeling. It fits very well together.

charcoal drawing on burnt paper. this photo isn’t very good but its the best I could do at the time, the image is slightly on hold as I began to burn the edges but had some technical difficulties with my lighter so did not finish that portion.
I chose charcoal for this because I find it to be an earthy medium, delicate but bold as it’s grainy, fluid, but strong in its mark as well- all feelings that are invoked by the tones in this song. I drew a flower being born, blooming, but as soon as it blooms it begins to die… this is a metaphor I can associate with many aspects of relationships within oneself and others, platonic or not, and also something I see being applied to life overall- as we strive to reach “happiness” or a state of optimum pleasure in our lives, but the concept of being “happy” is not true, as once we think we finally reached “that”, it could slip away so easily, or our lives begin to come to an end. “happiness” (for lack of a better word) can be found in all moments (small or big) of life and our determination to get a hold of it sort of defeats the purpose of “that” (happiness, optimum pleasure, peace etc.) I think this is the nature of being human because even if one is aware of this {dilemma} one can easily fall back into this state of mind- and that’s comical for me in a sad sense, its nostalgic, it’s so very human.
Personally I’m more drawn into the burnt aspect. I think the char olé drawing helps blend the idea of that burn th aspect through the but it’s also in a way unnessisary.

The image gave me the feelings that it is not one person who can not swim and drown in the water, but a person gave up his life and decided to record his last moment in his life, listening to the music and hug death peacefully.
That is pretty much the exact feeling I was going for! Thanks for the comment
