Kinesis

Kinesis: News about women that’s not in the dallies was the largest feminist magazine in Canada, and was published ten times a year from 1974 to 2001. Kinesis covered both national and international news, and worked to actively fight against all forms of oppression and ignorance while representing voices from all demographics of the Vancouver community. The newspaper was forced to stop publishing after government cuts severely curtailed their budget.

Kinesis – April 1980 (The UBC Library Digitization Centre)

In 2013, the UBC Library Digitization Centre at the University of British Columbia made every copy of Kinesis accessible online. Each edition can be browsed online or downloaded for offline use. The digitization of Kinesis has allowed access to the generations and demographics who previously were not exposed to the magazine and its ideas. In this way, Kinesis and its mission live on despite the fact that it is no longer published. The retroactive digitization serves the same purpose of this blog: to promote feminist community building using materials of the past (through the archive), in a new, more accessible way (moving from print to online format).
