Pipe Excavation

Site Location UBC Farm October 20, 2018.

Starting point location of excavation hole about 1 foot deep and 2 feet in diameter .

Digging tools – shovels, long bar, small pick axe, big pick axe, hammer, rake.  Before digging, used shears to clear grass, shrubs and tree branches around site.

At this stage over 4′ wide x 7′ long x max 5′ deep hole.  Final size ended up over 4′ x 9′ x  max 62″ depth.  Soil is fairly rocky and clean, no garbage found.  At about a depth of 2 feet, soil is more packed and difficult to break with a shovel. At about 3 feet in depth, hit hard pan and a pick axe was used to break the hard pan into grey shale like pieces.

Piles of soil and shale.  Wood planks placed across hole and used for measuring depth and climbing support.

24″ x 5 foot pipe for inserting into hole.  5 foot pipe sits on top of a 2 foot short pipe at bottom.  Pipe weighs over 22 kg.  Therefore total length of pipe is about 7 feet in length.

Outer pipe in hole.  Ladder was constructed and used to climb down and out of hole.  As well used as a sled to remove pipe from hole.

Inner pipe inserted into outer pipe.  Leveled.  Water pooled at bottom is from the previous night’s rain showers.  Water and mud was bailed out of hole to continue digging and shaping hole for pipe insertion.

Pipe excavation completed.  Pipe covered and ready for soil and water sensors.  October 27, 2018.
