E-portfolio Assignment #4: Assessment tools

It was nice to return and see how Moodle has evolved from my foray into online learning form years ago. In previous versions of moodle, I have created many quizzes, dealing with the frustrations and quirks that only Moodle could provide. 🙂

Since that time, I see that the built-in quiz tool has come a long way in logic, questions variety and especially features for the various question types. The number of different questions has at least doubled from version 1.8 or so that I had used. This is a very nice change and offers significantly more flexibility in the way the quiz flows and how it is presented to the end user. I think the ‘1 question per page’, information pages, free vs sequential, etc. are excellent features and offer significant flexibility to the instructor.

It took me a considerable amount of time to figure out how to delete quiz attempts. Although I had created all the quiz questions, I had not included them all in the quiz I had created (this is a nice feature – questions are NOT tied to the quiz, thus easy to re-use in different quizzes). The problem I ran into was being able to edit the quiz and add the questions. As I had attempts on the quiz, it would not allow me to make changes to the quiz. I found this odd as I was in admin mode and assumed I could do anything to my quiz. So, off I went to figure out _how_ to delete quiz attempts.

I found my solution HERE.

I had to click on the hyperlink to view the attempts on the quiz.

Now, at this step, nothing happened when I clicked ‘show report’ – I was supposed to see a list of attempts, be able to check off the ones I wanted to delete, and carry-on. But I could not view attempts.

Turns out I had missed what should have been obvious to me. The quiz attempts were being filtered and as there is no one enrolled in my course, yet the default selection (as seen in the image). As I changed ot to the last option, everything was displayed and I was able to delte the attempts and carry-on with the quiz editing.

Although I have had considerable practice with Moodle in the past, I was feeling rather sheepish and goofy that this had slowed me down this long.

I found the posts in the forums useful to see how people from the course were progressing and helped me resolve some of the quirks I ran into. I also found the Moodle forums to be excellent yet again.
