Adivasi of Kerala, India: Mapping material and non-material ecosystem services and profiling non-timber forest products use
Goal: Conservation of communities and cultures is as vital as the conservation of ecosystem health and services. Adivasi in India are communities dependent on natural landscapes for subsistence and cultural identity. Efforts to understand local landscape benefits are conducted to resolve local land management challenges.
GPS point and transect data was used to map social-economic-ecological relationships between the Adivasi indigenous people of the Wayanad District of Kerala, India and their environment. Measures of forest use intensity as well as site richness and diversity in terms of ecosystem services were quantified using kernel density analysis.
Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) were also analyzed using tabular data of quantities sold. Time-series analysis was used to describe/profile increasing or decreasing trends in NTFP use, harvesting, availability and economic viability.
