KWL

If you guessed that the photo was of fish gills you are right!  It is pretty hard to tell when the camera zooms in very close.  Today we are going to learn all about salmon gills.  Take a look at the picture below to see where the gills are located.  You will learn what their function is in this lesson.

Before we get started on our experiment, I would like you to create a KWL chart with your group. I would like each of you to contribute as many ideas as you can.  You may know something that your peer does not.

This part of the lesson will be done on chart paper.  Please send one person to the materials table to pick up your chart and pens.  You are welcome to use words and pictures to share your thinking.

Step 1: K stands for know

In this area of the chart please record all of your groups ideas about what you know, or think you know about salmon gills.  There are no wrong answers!

Step 2: W stands for wonder

This is the area of the chart where you can record any questions you have about salmon gills.  There are no silly questions, so ask away!

Step 3: L stands for learn – but we will complete this part of the chart when we finish the lesson.  As you work your way through the lesson, remember some of the questions you came up with.

When you are finished the K and W sections of your chart click on the Experiment tab!
