This project records the experiences of three narrators — two young people who are formal members of activist organizations and a parent introducing her child to leftist thought — to learn how young people engaged with activism over the past year. The year 2020 saw a range of societal stressors that massively changed the ways people in Canada and the United States “do” activism. This oral history project hopes to elucidate how activism took place during this time, adapting to both heightened COVID-19 related restrictions and the increased agitation of the broader public to social justice issues. The perspectives of activist youth themselves and (in the latter case) of a parent’s relationship with her young child provide valuable insights into a range of “involvement” within different movements working towards varied social justice-oriented goals.
