Work-Able is a 12-month, paid internship with the BC Public Service for recent post-secondary graduates (within the last three years) who self-identify as having a disability. Each year, this unique program provides learning, coaching and mentorship to a group of up to 15 interns while they gain valuable skills and public service experience

“In the Limelight” Video Contest

A hard of hearing computer scientist paved the way for the modern Internet. A dyslexic businessman founded one the largest brokerage firms in the United States. A blind inventor is developing technology to make the world a more accessible place. Whether it’s as a student, intern, mid-level manager, or high- level executive, individuals with disabilities bring a unique perspective and diverse talents to the world, universities and the workplace each and every day.

Though many stories exist just like these, a lack of visibility contributes to societal misconceptions and stigmas about what it means to live and work with a disability. Help us change the narrative!

Lime Connect is launching the first ever #IntheLimelight Video Contest to showcase how university students and professionals are rebranding disability through achievement. Share your story of how you live #IntheLimelight and you can win up to $10,000 cash!

How to Participate:

In (1) 1–2 minute video, please tell us about your disability, some of the daily challenges you may experience as a student or professional, and how you are rocking it!

We’re awarding a total of $25,000 in cash prizes to the top videos, provided by Lime Connect special advisor, Vint Cerf – Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist, “One of the Fathers of the Internet,” and the inspiration behind this contest!

Entries will be accepted from Monday, July 17, 2017–Sunday, August 20, 2017 @11:59 PM EST.

NEADS Accepting Applications for National Student Awards/Holly Bartlett Memorial Award/AMI Scholarships/Christine Nieder Memorial Award: Deadline April 30th

The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) is now accepting applications for the NEADS National Student Awards Program, the Holly Bartlett and Christine Nieder Memorial Awards and the AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarships. These awards are offered to encourage full access to post-secondary education for persons with disabilities enrolled in undergraduate, graduate or professional degree programs at recognized Canadian universities, or in certified diploma programs at Canadian colleges. Two outstanding applicants who meet eligibility criteria will be eligible for the $5,000 Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship (one English, one French). Up to six deserving applicants, who meet the criteria of the NEADS Student Awards Program, will be receiving an award in the amount of $3,000 to support the costs of their tuition and student fees. One or more eligible and outstanding applicant(s) will receive the Holly Bartlett and Christine Nieder Memorial Awards, in the amount of $1,000.

“We are very proud of the NEADS Awards Program, the Holly Bartlett Memorial Award and the Christine Nieder Memorial Award and our close to 90 recipients over its first 10 years,” said Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai, NEADS’ Director of Research and the director of the student awards program. “These programs are the first of their kind in Canada, and were created to recognize overall excellence among students with disabilities in all aspects of post-secondary education. Our winners to date all embody the very best qualities of academic and community involvement. We hope that the program continues to grow, and we look forward to this year’s crop of outstanding applicants.”

Formerly known as the AMI Scholarship, the award has been renamed the AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship in honour of the organization’s Accessibility Officer who passed away in December, 2015. Robert Pearson was a long-time employee of AMI and fervent supporter of accessibility in Canada and around the world.

“Renaming the AMI Scholarship in Robert’s memory ensures that his hard work lives on and forever reminds us of his commitment to accessibility and creating a more inclusive society,” explains Peter Burke, AMI Vice-President of Marketing and Communications. “The Scholarship program was created to further strengthen the organization’s commitment to making accessible media for all Canadians; a role that Robert embraced with great passion and enthusiasm. He was an inspiration to all of us.”

Entering its sixth year, the AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship program offers much needed financial assistance to students with a disability. In 2017, AMI will once again collaborate with the National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) to administer the program and engage students with disabilities from across the country. Two $5,000 bursaries will be awarded to two deserving students with a permanent disability; one from the English community and one from the French.

“Holly Bartlett was loved by all who knew her”, said Frank Smith, NEADS’ National Coordinator. “It was my privilege and pleasure to work with Holly while she served on our Board of Directors. Holly’s accomplishments, in a life that was way too short, were phenomenal. We believe that the Holly Bartlett Memorial Award is a fitting tribute because it will help other students with disabilities realize success in post-secondary education. This is the seventh year of the Award in Holly’s memory.” NEADS has given out 11 Holly Bartlett Awards since the inception of this program.

Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai said of the Christine Nieder Memorial Award, in its third year: “Christine was a valued part of NEADS, and the National Graduate Experience Taskforce, as well as an important contributor to our work nationally and in British Columbia, and a good friend. We honour her legacy and her passion for research and volunteerism with this new award.”

UBC and Access & Diversity Student wins NEADS AMI Scholarship!

Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) Scholarships

Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) previously announced the winners of its 2016 AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship program on November 3rd, 2016. The program, which launched in 2012, is open to Canadian students enrolled in a diploma or degree program at a Canadian post-secondary school. Two scholarships valued at $5,000 each are awarded annually to students with a disability, one in English and one in French.

NEADS manages the AMI Scholarships in a partnership with AMI.

The winners of the 2016 AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship are Sean Heaslip of Vancouver, British Columbia and Valérie Poisson from Montreal, Quebec. Sean is in year one of a Doctoral program in Counseling Psychology at the University of British Columbia while Valérie is pursuing her Masters in Voice Performance at the University of Ottawa.

“Congratulations to the 2016 NEADS Awards winners and the recipients of the AMI Scholarship, said Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai, Director of the Student Awards Program. “We received nearly 300 applications for the 2016 competition. Choosing the winners was an extremely difficult process.

The achievements and perseverance of all candidates were just incredible. The dedication and success of this year’s winners truly embodies the spirit of all NEADS Student Awards programs and the AMI Scholarship. We wish all winners the very best in their programs and careers and look forward to watching their future success. About the NEADS Student Awards:

The NEADS National Student Awards Program is offered to encourage full access to post-secondary education for persons with disabilities, who often have greater barriers to participation in higher education, as well as extra costs because of their disabilities.

Students must currently be registered in and continuing at post-secondary institution and provide documented proof of registration as part of the application and on receipt of the award.

The award is offered to outstanding applicants who meet the criteria of the program. The awards are paid directly to the post-secondary institution (in the students accounts) that the recipients are attending to defray the cost of tuition fees for post-secondary study.

About the NEADS Holly Bartlett Memorial Award:

The Holly Bartlett Memorial Award was established by the NEADS board of directors after the passing of Holly in 2010. Holly Bartlett served on the NEADS Board of Directors as the associations Nova Scotia Director for a number of years.

Holly’s accomplishments, in a life that was way too short, were phenomenal. The Holly Bartlett Memorial Award is a tribute to Holly. The scholarship assists students with disabilities realize success in post-secondary education. This is the sixth year for the Award in Holly’s memory.

About the Christine Nieder Memorial Award:

The Christine Nieder Memorial Award was established in 2015 to commemorate the life and contributions of Ms. Christine Nieder, NEADS Board member, who passed away in July 2014. The award will be offered to a graduate student with a disability in the amount of $1,000 in recognition of Christines passionate work to address barriers faced to participation in graduate programs of study.
