The Centre for Student Involvement and Careers is hosting a Work on Campus Fair taking place on Wednesday August 9th from 11:00AM-2:00PM, providing students with an opportunity to meet with on-campus employers hiring for Fall 2017. Ten different campus employers will be meeting with students to provide more information about opportunities available, accepting resumes and conducting on-site interviews to hire students for part time employment opportunities starting in September.

National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) seeks applications for its Board of Directors – due November 21, 2016

The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) is seeking applications for the next two year term of its board of directors, January 01, 2017 – December 31, 2018. All persons interested in a position on the board must be regular members in good standing, that is students with disabilities enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution or recent graduates with disabilities who have graduated within the last five years.

The NEADS Board of Directors is composed of eleven seats; there are ten provincial Directors (British Columbia Director, Alberta Director, Saskatchewan Director, Manitoba Director, Ontario Director, Quebec Director, Nova Scotia Director, Newfoundland and Labrador Director, Prince Edward Island Director, New Brunswick Director), one territorial Director. Candidates for the positions of provincial/territorial Directors must be students or recent graduates with disabilities, residing in and/or attending a post-secondary institution in the geographic location they seek to represent.

NEADS Board members will be expected to attend a minimum of twelve (12) monthly Board teleconferences, as well as one to two in-person Board meetings per year, funding permitting.

Board members are also expected to participate in and chair NEADS standing and project committees, and take part in Committee teleconferences.

Provincial/territorial Board members also represent their Province/Territory on the Board, serve to bring the work of NEADS to their jurisdiction, as well as to bring local issues to the national table. Board members may participate in local, regional and provincial committees and activities, within the framework provided by NEADS mandate and mission.

No prior participation in the disability or student movements is required to join the NEADS Board. Members who have strong skill sets in governance, fundraising, finance, social media and membership/partnership outreach are especially welcome. Any interested and enthusiastic NEADS member with relevant skill sets and a strong work ethic is encouraged to seek election. If you would like to become a member of the NEADS Board, please complete and sign the Nomination Form as specified online and submit it by NO LATER THAN November 21, 2016.

Time Commitment:

Board members will be expected to attend a minimum of 12 teleconferences per year, each lasting up to 2 hours, as well as 1-2 in-person Board retreats per year, dependent upon funding, that typically run Friday-Sunday. Board members are also expected to serve on at least one committee, and attend regular committee meetings by teleconference as required. Correspondence of the Board is primarily by email and telephone; members are also expected to keep up-to-date with and respond to, as necessary, all correspondence.

Note: Prospective Board members may come from a variety of backgrounds: for example community service, student leadership, provincial and regional committees, etc.; or may come from none of these backgrounds. Although specific skill sets are not required, prior experience in Board governance will be a strong asset. Interest in, and experience with, establishing regional and national projects, programs; grant funding and financial management would also be an asset. A strong commitment to participate and engage with the volume of Board business is a must. Students with disabilities are encouraged to attend a one-to-one career advising appointment with Karen Kelsey from Lime Connect on the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016.  Lime Connect is an organization that provides a network and a myriad of resources for students with any disability who wish to explore their career development, learn about scholarships co-ops/internships, and discover potential full time opportunities with Lime Connect’s industry and corporate partners.  They offer professional development webinars and discuss ‘whether, when and how” to share information about your disability to a prospective employer.

Breaking it Down: Dialogues on Removing Barriers for People With Disabilities in the Workplace (Vancouver, British Columbia, Saturday, March 12, 2016)

The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) invites post-secondary students and graduates with disabilities, career educators and representatives from federally regulated private sector employers to a one day innovative and interactive workshop “Breaking it Down (BID):

Dialogues on removing barriers for people with disabilities in the workplace”, to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia on Saturday, March 12th from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at Simon Fraser University, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, 149 West Hastings Street. This event is presented by the Centre for Students With Disabilities and Career Services, Simon Fraser University.

The BID workshop is part of “Breaking Through

Barriers”: An Employment Project To Support Persons With Disabilities, a national two–and-a-half year project funded by Labour Canada through its Workplace Opportunities:

Removing Barriers to Equity program. The initiative is aimed at connecting recent graduates with disabilities and employers in the federally regulated sector, through in-person workshops and a unique web portal designed to create on-going relationships and resource sharing between disabled graduates and employers.

During this event, students and employers will have the opportunity to hear from both lived experience and employer experts on topics such

as: Personal Branding and Social Media; Disclosure and Accommodation In The Workplace; Job Interviews; Soft Skills: Challenges in the Workplace; Professional Development; Barriers and Focused Career Transitions; Moving On From Entry Level. Unlike most employment workshops that rely on a one-way flow of knowledge from employer to potential employee, student and employer participants will have the opportunity to engage in facilitated discussions about the issues aimed at creating a knowledge exchange process between employers and potential employees.

Come join NEADS and representatives of our valued project partners (see below), for an employment workshop that will bring job seekers and job makers together, who will learn from each other by……….Breaking it Down. VocalEye – Live Audio Description

VocalEye started over seven years ago, kicking off with a production of “The Miracle Worker” at the Vancouver Playhouse.   It was the first Live Audio Description program in the country.  Which means people with low vision or blindness can listen to a description of a play or performance, in between dialogue, as it unfolds live on stage.

VocalEye regularly partners with The Arts Club Stanley, The Arts Club Granville Island, The Gateway, PuSh Festival and The Surrey Arts Centre.

People who are blind or have low vision can become a member of VocalEye for free.  You can contact  to sign-up.  Included in a membership is the possibility of a ‘touch tour’ during select performances.
