For the last 5 years I have worked in Medical Education on two different Learner Management/Information Systems. These systems are very operational in that they facilitate the registration and evaluation of learners as well as accommodate Case Logging (the ability to track completed procedures) and On Call Stipends (tracking completed calls for payment).
I currently work in Postgraduate Medical education at the University of Toronto. It’s a very exciting time as Postgraduate Medical education is moving towards a competency based module, we’ve just gone through an external review of our major LISs and our Director of Medical Information Technology took up a new post with the Law Society. With all the change, there is ample room for changes and innovations. One of the changes will have my position evolving into a more strategic direction position, which is very exciting. However, I feel I need to round out my skill set to be a better asset to my organization.
Through this course, I’m hoping to gain more knowledge on the evaluation of LMSs, which I hope to apply in my career to other Education Technologies. I’m also hoping to gain more technical expertise. I feel this is my greatest weakness in my current position. I’d like to be able to talk the talk and walk the walk (sorry for the bad cliche). I also really interested in broadening my toolkit. Right now I’m an expert on our LISs and I’m knowledgable on Blackboard and our learner repositories. I’d like to become more aware of the other educational technologies that are being used to support Postgrad and to help me as my career evolves.
Finally, I’m also hoping to meet more of my peers and hoping develop relationships that exist outside the classroom. I always find the best way to grow and develop new ideas is through bouncing those ideas off of peers.
