The 2nd quarter loser——Blackberry

“Smartphone maker BlackBerry lost $965 million US in its second quarter on its continuing operations, and had experienced a 45 per cent decrease of revenue from the same period last year.” (CBC business news, Sep. 27th) Although lots of improvements have already been made for the new-published products–Z10, there are still lots of parts for company to work on.

Apps:  Firstly, Apps is an important factor of choosing a smart phone nowadays. Indeed, the reason why iPhone or Samsung could become the top 3 preferences in the mind of customers is that they have comprehensive apps market. Therefore, in order to obtain more core competence, blackberry should work more on enriching their apps market.

Overcoming techniques: Moreover, some overcoming techniques like Predictive typing could also cause a lot of uncertain problems to the blackberry industry. The truth is that not all the customers could accept those overcoming techniques; therefore, some of the customers would no longer use the new  blackberry.

Abandon the brand characteristic:  The previous smart phone Q10, which is the most popular one with physical keyboard, is best preference of hard-core BlackBerry fans. However, blackberry company abandoned this brand characteristic in their new product—Z10, which has been regarded as the main reason of dramatic losing of its customers in the 2nd quarter. Thus, blackberry should concern more about balancing the customers’ preferences and advanced techniques in following inventions.

In conclusion, Blackberry should not only look forward to developing advanced techniques, more importantly, they should look back to their accumulated experience for enhancing their core competence as well.
