The Substance Use and Gambling Lab at the University of Calgary and Healthy Families Lab at the University of British Columbia are running a study about substance use and gambling trends among university students across Canada. All University of British Columbia students are invited to participate in a 15-to-25-minute online survey and enter to win one of four $100 gift cards. You can participate even if you don’t use drugs/substances or gamble.

Participate in Oxford Research on BIPOC First-Generation Student Experiences!

Nawreen Hena is a master’s student at the University of Oxford, currently pursuing studies in Higher Education. As a Canadian and a proud alumna of the University of Alberta, their research reflects their commitments to equitable education practice in Canada. 
 
Their master’s dissertation focuses on understanding the experiences of BIPOC first-generation students in Canadian U15 institutions, to explore the relationship between institutional practices and their development within the university.
 
They are seeking participants who meet the following criteria: individuals who identify as a visible minority or Indigenous, are first-generation students without parents or guardians with a university education, and are enrolled in full-time undergraduate study.
 
They are inviting eligible students to participate in approximately hour-long semi-structured interviews, where they may share reflections on their academic journey and their relationship with the university.

Volunteer Opportunity: Help Us Showcase SON!

We are excited to announce a special volunteer opportunity for School of Nursing students. We are organizing a photoshoot to capture storytelling for our school’s promotional materials, and we would love for you to be a part of it.

The photoshoot will take place on March 5 between 8:30-4:30 at Koerner Pavillion (SON).
Interested? See below for additional details and please email Heather.Swallow@ubc.ca by February 29 to confirm your interest and availability for March 5 between 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
 
COMMITMENT
We ask that you commit a minimum of ~2 hours of your time on March 5. While the actual photography is likely only around an hour, the team recommends you block 2 hours of your day so you can be available for briefing and to account for any potential delays.
 
PHOTO CONTENT AND PURPOSE
These images will be incorporated into our public-facing photo library and shared with APSC and UBC for promotional materials, website images, news stories, announcements and so on. In addition, sometimes magazines reach out, for example, McLean’s for their university issue. A consent form will be shared for you to review and sign.
 
SCENARIOS
We will be taking photos in the lab, hospital setting, and a classroom. These photos are people- and action-focused. These are all completely staged with faculty and student volunteers. You will be directed through each scene. Examples: Studying at a laptop with friends, performing an injection on a patient, participating in a lecture.
 
WARDROBE
Depending on the scenes you are assigned, you may be in scrubs or in your regular, professional/casual street-clothes. Information will be shared with you in advance, including tips on what to wear and what to avoid. Please note that you may bring any additional props or accessories that you feel would enhance your outfit or contribute to the overall theme of the shoot (such as laptop, textbooks, backpack, etc.)

CNF Scholarship Applications – Deadline is March 15th, 2024 (11:59pm EST)

The Canadian Nurses Foundation provides scholarships for nursing students across Canada at the baccalaureate, masters and Ph.D. levels. These scholarships are awarded based on merit and range from $750 to $10,000.

CNF offers a variety of scholarships with specific criteria to ONE IN FIVE applicants across Canada every year!

The awards have different values, depending on the level. Generally, the average value is:

  • Baccalaureate level from $750 to $3,000
  • Master and Nurse Practitioner level from $1,000 to $5,000
  • PhD level from $2,000 to $10,000

BC Scholarship Society Indigenous Student Award – Applications Due: April 4, 2024 (4:30 PST)

The Society offers Indigenous Award programs for students pursuing post-secondary education in BC. They are available to students who identify as Indigenous – First Nations (Status or Non-Status), Métis or Inuit. All are renewable in order to provide sustained funding over multiple years.

Indigenous Student Awards: $1000-$5000 (renewable annually) for students pursuing trades training, apprenticeship, diploma, certificates, degree or post-degree programs.

Three awards of $450 each are offered by the Nursing Undergraduate Society to graduating students of the May 2024 cohort who are dedicated to the nursing profession and have strived to improve the school life environment of UBC nursing students through volunteer activity. Candidates are to be nominated by their fellow students and nominations will be reviewed and adjudicated for mid-May by the BSN Awards Committee.
