Andrews Scenic Acres

Canada’s first Green Care Farm for people with dementia is set to commence in the summer of 2022, at Andrews Scenic Acres in Milton, Ontario. The pilot phase of the program will work with people under the age of 65 who have been diagnosed with early onset dementia.

The restorative qualities of the landscape come from being away from the stresses of everyday life, and connecting with nature on a sensorial level. This site offers extensive agricultural fields, rolling hills and trails, which all serve as a base for healing. Participants will take part in a ‘sights and sounds’ walk during each visit, following the seasonality of the crops and exploring the green gems found throughout the property.

The cognitive benefits of Green Care Farming come from being within a meaningful context of place and tasks, allowing participants to engage in purposeful vocation that they would otherwise not have access to. The garden design at Andrews Scenic Acres is multifunctional and flexible, responding to the needs of the clientele and the farm staff of any given season. There is space for active involvement, quiet reflection, socialization and agricultural production.

Being among others with similar experiences and contributing to a communal goal creates a safe space for participants to connect with one another. Green Care Farming creates a platform for social connections which are otherwise rare for people living with dementia. After a season spent in the garden at Andrews Scenic Acres, Green Care Farm participants can bond over the success of their efforts and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
