The CHEQ in Action
What districts across BC are saying about the CHEQ:
"I use it all the time for everything. I really really do. There isn't a week that goes by in a year that I'm not referring to it in some way, shape, or form."
"As we continue to talk about it people will see the value of it and we will be able to strengthen our practice. What does this tell us about information education, activity initiatives, what can we be doing in our community, what are parents telling us are the things they want to be able to do and have these experiences for their children?"
"And then a couple of weeks into the school year and I see people looking back into the data... They can connect with the parents and then specific questions can be the start of a conversation."
"We haven't even seen the half of the potential of it yet - I know there's more. People keep asking what does it look like district wide - but we can't give them that data yet."
"Love it. I absolutely love the CHEQ. I love it."
How districts across BC are using CHEQ data:
"We had a high percentage of children not having any outside time that was unstructured, so we spent time talking to parents about free play and choice. Every Wednesday we spend the afternoon out at the cub scout camp building forts because we saw a need in the data. So we tried to say what can we do within the hours of the day."
"I would say one example that's really powerful is we have a pilot site here for the reduced cost childcare and we can use the CHEQ data to tell the province that costs prevent some people from accessing childcare in our community."
"We are using the CHEQ to learn more about if what's being offered is actually what's being accessed. What are we offering? Where are we offering these services? Are we meeting the needs in our neighbourhoods? We have pretty diverse programming out there, but need to make sure we're offering it in the right areas."
"I shared the graph of how much time per day your child plays video games or is on an electronic device because that was high on our priority list last year in terms of wanting to have conversations with parents about managing media."
"For instance, a public health nurse wondered why there were some kids that weren't being seen by a health professional and now the SLP is making monthly visits into the Strong Start room as a result."
