After 500 pages of readings and not to mention the 90 hours of lectures my Marketing teacher, I’ve realized one amazing thing about Marketing:

It is definitely not 100% profit driven.

At the end of the day, profits will still be the measure of the success of any Marketing implementation, but it is not necessarily the goal of Marketing as a whole.

“Social Marketing” is this idea which has forever changed my view in Marketing.

From one business’s supplier, employees, staff, marketing channels and basically every aspect of the supply chain, this idea of Social Marketing must be present at all times. Like any other chain, you’re only as strong as your weakest link, as I learned in Marketing class.

So what exactly is Social Marketing?

In a Nutshell, “The goal of social marketing is to build a long-term relationship between your organization and its different audiences.” (http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/rural/facts/92-097.htm).

In the cut-throat world of business, it is relief to know that there still those who aim to serve people rather than aim to simply drain people out of their money.

From what I’ve learned in Marketing class, Marketers should focus on building long-term relationships with every customer they encounter, and they should aim to satisfy these customers. In focusing on creating this relationship, a business will surely and most definitely thrive.

Focus on creating an image for your brand and make sure that every aspect of your business embodies that image.

Here is a “great compass” on social marketing:

http://kevinmcdougall.wordpress.com/2011/07/14/great-social-marketing-infographic-from-brian-solis/

My classmate and very good friend, Cristina Cuyegkeng, writes in her blog, Marketing for Marketing, about how our class has also changed her view on Marketing. She explains how through our class, her view of marketing as a solely profit-making means, is actually directed towards providing customers with what they want and need.

At the end of it all, there is only one thing I wish for you as a reader to take away from this, and that is there is hope for the business world today.

As always, Thanks for reading.

Since the early 1800’s time of the Romans’, Marketers have already tried billions of, if not more, ways to sell a certain product.

Marketers would always come up with the most ingenious ideas just get their products to be known, even using a telegraph during the 1800’s!

Yes, you’ve read right! A TELEGRAPH!

Fun fact 1: The first unsolicited mass spam message was sent out during 1864 via a TELEGRAPH, and it was a commercial for investment opportunities!

Fun fact 2: Did you know that the term “SPAM” was originally an acronym for “Sales Promotion and Marketing”?

Through out the years, marketers have been using various amounts of channels to be able to advertise their products to their desired customer segment and target market.

Today, one of the major channels being used is social media!

From Facebook to Twitter, marketers have been exploiting this channel because it can reach millions, if not billions, of people for virtually no cost.

Teah, a classmate of mine in my Marketing class, has posted a blog on how Twitter was able to help Carnival Cruise Lines and Cirque du Soleil reach their customers.
In her blog, Marketing Blog #3: Adding Value Through Twitter, Teah highlights benefits of using social media, such as Twitter, to a company, especially in trying to communicate to their customers about upcoming promos, events and the like.

Twitter came to life during 2006, and during then, no one could really grasp the potential of such a simple concept.

Today, Marketers need to be up-to-date with the current marketing trends that are, for lack of a better term, “trending” in our current world to be able to have a competitive advantage against their competitors.

One of the hottest trends today is online marketing! Twitter is a form of online marketing and so are the various social medias!

One new form of online marketing is also arising and that is the use of INFOGRAPHS!

Infographs are becoming popular due to it’s creative approach to sharing information to it’s viewers.

With the world riddles with countless information, potential customers are having a hard time trying to find specific information they need to make a purchase.

Using infographs is one of the best ways, today, to show information in a concise, fun and entertaining way.

Here’s an Infograph about Marketing Channels!

Thanks again for reading this blog!

Being the little geek that I am, as a kid, my most favorite toys in the world was

Legos s!!
Once, my grandfather got fed up with me, since I was a rowdy little boy, he bought this huge LEGOs spaceship that had about 2000 pieces. He thought to himself, “This should keep him busy for the whole day”. Then the moment he looked back, about an hour later, the whole ship was already built and I was back to my rowdy self!

Up to this day, I still treasure these small little building blocks because you never know what you can make with all the different pieces!

Now what does LEGOs have to do with anything?

My love for LEGOs have brought me, today, to be a Advocate of this game:

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is an Indie Game developed by Mojang.

The game revolves around blocks. Basically you go around breaking blocks and essentially building things from the blocks you break.

Here’s the Trailer for the game:

Minecraft is like LEGOs but in an entirely new platform and scale. There is no limit to what you can do in this game.

Here are a few images of what people have done with the game:

From Lord of The Rings’ Minas Tirith to a self made City, there is absolutely nothing you can’t do in this game.

One of the most amazing things this game has done is making itself known to the public. Without the use of any TV advertising nor gigantic billboards, this game currently has over 14 million registered players and nearly 4 million people who have bought the game.

What’s more, the game is currently in BETA!!

Meaning it’s still in it’s current testing phase before it is officially launched.

The success of this game is not only in it’s amazing concept, but also it’s marketing.

Team Mojang was able to make this game known, via the internet, most specifically, YOUTUBE.

I, for one, found out about this game via Youtube! I was browsing through the Comedy section of Youtube and I came a cross a “Live Play” of this game being shown in a person’s channel, and ever since then, I got hooked.

I became a YOGNAUGHT! (a avid follower of the Yogscast)

As far as my knowledge goes, the biggest advocates of Minecraft is:

The Yogscast is run by Simon and Lewis, both from England, and what it is is one of the “Live Plays” or “LPs” I first watched before I got into the whole Minecraft scene.

The Yogscast uses Youtube to broadcast their LPs and basically what they do is simply to record themselves playing the game with their voices. The success of the Yogscast revolves around the comedy they bring to the game and the complete and utter hilarious antics both Lewis and Simon brings!

Here’s their Official channel in youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/user/BlueXephos

I invite you to watch their “Shadow of Israpheal” series and all their other LPs as they are simply hilarious!

Seeing the opportunity, Team Mojang collaborated with the Yogscast and invited them to GAMESCOM, Europe’s biggest trade fair for interactive games and entertainment, to be Minecraft’s official spokes people along with Sonic Ericsson!

The use of Advocates and social media have been a prime marketing strategy of the Minecraft team.

The Yogscast, alone, has over 1 million subscribers and over 86 million channel views. Minecraft basically has free advertisement every time someone watches minecraft!

The use of advocates is an emerging field of marketing, the benefit that can be generated from using such advocates is yet to be fully quantified, but it is immense.

The Yahoo Advertising blog has a Info graph that gives summary of how advocates think.

You can read more here:
http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/05/27/how-brand-advocates-influence-social-media-marketing/

As the author of the blog [Becky Ebenkamp] says, “While it’s still hard to measure the precise sales value that marketers get from advocates, ultimately it’s about starting and engaging people in brand conversations, making this still-emerging field an important part of any modern marketing mix.”

Spoken like a true Advocate believer.

As countless businesses emerge, there is a competition to get chunks of the current market share that is out there today, and one of the best ways to do so is using Advocates to further make your brand known to the public.

Who knows, maybe you’ll find your own Simon and Lewis to boost your Brand Identity to high levels!

As for me, I am and always will be a Minecraft lover, and I invite you to give the game a go!

Release your creativity! and the community of Minecraft is HUGE! Just google the game and you’ll see!

Here’s a little something I did!

Today, it is almost impossible to not see an Apple product in every where we go.

As far as I can remember, Apple was not as “cool” and “hip” as it is today. When I was about 6-9 years old, Apple looked like this:

Nothing like the and Apple computer nor laptop we see in the current world today.

When Microsoft started becoming popular, and the Windows OS came out, Apple kind of just vanished and you could no longer see any Apple products floating around anywhere.

Then Steve Jobs created the very first iPod.

This is one of the first advertisements for the iPod that Apple launched:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWqj6OQQOHA

Now contrast that to these old Apple computer Advertisements:

One huge change I can really see is the position that Apple is trying to portray.

When you watch the old Advertisements, it was all about how the Mac was “more convenient, more sophisticated”, and all these technology-based stats that make it better than a PC.

But as Apple launched the iPod, the commercial was not about technical advantages, rather it was about how Apple is the new Hip thing. Sure they throw in a few technical jargon, but the fact is, the offer the product as this new fashion statement which everyone must have.

Here are a few more recent commercial Apple has produced:

After offering a new fashion statement, Apple introduces its product as a newer and more hip computer where as the PC is an old computer meant for tedious and boring things like spreadsheets and calculations, as seen in the advertisement above.

What can I say about the entire image change is that it is definitely working great for Apple.

In Financial terms, Apple’s stock has never been higher and you can clearly see success Apple has achieved today just by walking around in the world today.
