About – Why the Black & White?

FNIS 401F

New Indigenous Media (FNIS 401F) at UBC critically explores “the theoretical, cultural, political-economic, and gendered dynamics underwriting the histories and futures of Indigenous new media”. Part of this exploration involves spending time in the space we are studying. Creating a blog and using it as a means of exploring questions of Indigenous new media in a tangible way.

Why the Black & White?

I chose the black and white theme and to have (the majority of) the images I use in black and white as a recognition that I am a settler writing about Indigenous cultures in a territory that is not my own. I can’t see these worldviews in the full spectrum of colour that Indigenous people who are part of them can. I am writing about them while being outside of them. It is important to acknowledge that I do not speak for these people and the black and white theme represents that I have a limited understanding of their full vibrancy.
