Carl Cavanagh Hodge is a professor emeritus of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan). He is a former Senior Volkswagen Research Fellow with the American Institute of Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University and a former NATO-EAPC fellow. He is the author or editor of nine books and numerous articles on European and American politics and history. Beyond the Barricades
Nicaragua and the Struggle for the Sandinista Press, 1979-1998

Throughout the 1980s, Barricada, the official daily newspaper of the ruling Sandinista Front, played the standard role of a party organ, seeking the mobilize the Nicaraguan public to support the revolutionary agenda. Beyond the Barricades, however, reveals a story that is both more intriguing and much more complex. Even during this period of sweeping transformation and outside military siege, another, more professional agenda also motivated Barricada’s journalists and editors.

When the Sandinistas unexpectedly fell from power in the 1990 elections, Barricada gained a substantial degree of autonomy that allowed it to explore a more balanced and nuanced journalism “in the national interest.” This new orientation, however, ran afoul of more orthodox party leaders, who gradually gained the upper hand in the bitter internal struggle that wracked the Sandinista Front in the early 1990s. The paper closed its doors in January 1998.

Adam Jones’s outstanding study offers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes looks at Barricada’s two decades of evolution and dissolution. It also presents an intimate portrait of a key revolutionary institution and the memorable individuals who were a part of it.

More than two hundred wars have been fought in the past half-century. Nearly all have been civil wars, and at the beginning of the twenty-first century, more than thirty civil wars were being fought. The “rules” of interstate war do not apply; each atrocity provokes retribution, and civil war takes on a brutal dynamic of its own. Civil War, Civil Peace challenges common but simplistic explanations of war, including greed, gender, and long-standing religious or ethnic hatreds, which ignore that these groups have lived together in peace for centuries.

Many observers seek the foundations of that movement in notions of rights and models of democratic institutions that originated in the global North. Challenging that view, this volume argues that Latin American community organizers, intellectuals, novelists, priests, students, artists, urban pobladores, refugees, migrants, and common people have contributed significantly to new visions of political community and participatory democracy. These local actors built an alternative transnational solidarity from below with significant participation of the socially excluded and activists in the Global South.

Edited by Jessica Stites Mor, this book offers fine-grained case studies that show how Latin America’s re-emerging Left transformed the struggles against dictatorship and repression of the Cold War into the language of anti-colonialism, socioeconomic rights, and identity.

Jessica Stites Mor is an associate professor of History at The University of British Columbia (Okanagan). She received her PhD in history at Yale University in 2008. She was a visiting fellow at the Instituto Ravignani of the Universidad de Buenos Aires from 2004-2007. She currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. She is the author of Transition Cinema: Political Filmmaking and the Argentine Left since 1968 (Pittsburgh, 2012), co-editor of El Pasado que miramos (The Past We View, Paídos, 2009) with Claudia Feld, and editor of Human Rights and Transnational Solidarity in Cold War Latin America (Wisconsin, 2013). She has also co-edited a special issue on South-South Solidarity for the Journal of Latin American and Iberian Research (2014), and authored several other journal articles.

Artwork displayed as part of this project – including the covers of books and journals containing work written or edited by UBCO scholars and researchers – is intended to help enliven university teaching spaces, educate classroom users about the connections between research and teaching, and introduce members of the broader public to some of the research and scholarship carried out at UBCO.
