Herbie Hancock

‘Well, I’m responsible for paying the guys and making sure that they work so I can keep a band. That’s one rough thing, because I have to worry not only about my family, I have to worry about six families – I have to be aware they’re there, and if I’m going to keep a band, I have to make sure that we’re working so that they can feed their families as well as I feed mine. Secondly, I guess the leader, depending on the guys in the group, can run into problems with personality, and I guess it’s up to the leader to really keep the situation open enough so that personality conflicts don’t erupt, keep some kind of harmony in the band. It’s kind of rough.’
