Ensemble Constantinople–Mexican Baroque concert: 20 March 2010

The final concert of the 2009-10 “Early Music in West Vancouver” Series, jointly presented with the Kay Meek Centre:
Ensemble Constantinople, with Françoise Atlan
Early Dreams: Epics for a New World

Saturday evening, March 20, 2010 at 8:00pm (pre-concert introduction at 7:15pm)
Kay Meek Centre, 1700 Mathers Avenue in West Vancouver

Following their sold-out West Coast debut at the 2008 Vancouver Early Music Festival, Ensemble Constantinople and the wonderfully mesmerizing singer Françoise Atlan return with a programme exploring the music of the Mexican Baroque and the poetry of Latin America’s first major poet, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695). With readings and improvisations, both instrumental and vocal, based on the famous diferencias (variations) by 17th-century Mexican composers Ribayaz and Murcia, this concert will feature intense dialogues between the baroque guitar, Persian sitar, voice, viola da gamba and percussion.

Françoise Atlan is one of Morocco’s leading singers not only of Sephardic but also Arabic song, and enjoys huge popularity among both Jewish and Muslim communities. Her Eastern Jewish roots and her thorough knowledge of Andalusian tradition have enabled her to develop an unmistakable, highly expressive style.
Constantinople is a performing ensemble that draws its inspiration from the music of the Mediterranean, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and Middle-Eastern musical traditions. Constantinople presents a new form of musical expression, born of a wellspring of transformation and integration of diverse traditions from the Middle Ages and today, from here and abroad.
