Welcome back & calls for papers

And an especially hearty welcome to new graduate students.

While you’re in the midst of SSHRC proposals and suchlike, spare a thought for academic conferences. Deadlines for proposals for the bigger ones are already fast approaching. Here are some of them, particularly angled towards graduate student colleagues. (This post will probably be updated over the next couple of days; do let O’Brien know of any other news to post up here).

1. TOMORROW!!!

Deadline: 10 September
U of Toronto: “Iconoclasm”:
22nd annual conference for the Centre for Comparative Literature (March 2011)

2. THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON MEDIEVAL STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN MICHIGAN, KALAMAZOO

(a.k.a. “Kalamazoo”)

Deadline: 15 September

How to submit a paper proposal/abstract (important if you decide to go for a general session instead):

Full list of sponsored sessions:

Participant information form: for Sponsored and Special sessions, one can usually save one’s completed document and email it to them. For other sessions, especially the General ones, it’s the old system of printing and mailing or faxing everything…

3. SOME FORTHCOMING PERTINENT (& MAINLY GRADUATE) CONFERENCES

(in order of deadline)

Deadline: 21 September
Columbia University Medieval Guild, 21st annual Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference (October 2010)

Deadline: 1 October
Illinois Medieval Studies Association (2011: DePaul, Chicago):

Deadline: 15 October.
Medieval Academy of America annual meeting.
They have graduate student panels, and are very encouraging to grad students generally. MAA 2011 is in a state of controversy (re. Arizona). Controversy aside, the deadline for proposals has been extended… [Ed. O’Brien is simply forwarding information, this being neither the time nor the place for any views she may have on the matter.]

Deadline: 15 October
Centre for Renaissance Studies, Newberry Library: Multidisciplinary graduate student conference

Deadline: 25 October
Vagantes: The MAA grad student conference.
Possibly now the biggest (and certainly one of the best) grad student conferences in North America. In Pittsburgh next year:

Deadline: 12 November
Berkeley graduate medieval studies conference:

Look out for (i.e Google): graduate student conferences at Catholic U of America, Fordham, Notre Dame, Princeton

4. OTHER CONFERENCES: INFORMATION THEREON

H-Net (worldwide)
http://www.h-net.org/announce/
one can subscribe for email updates–there’s often lots of irrelevant stuff though, just warning you: attentive filtering is de rigueur

The Medieval Academy of America (NB not just the US, North America):
http://www.medievalacademy.org/medacnews/2010-1news/News2010-1.htm
(you’ll need to scroll through and sort deadlines from actual dates of events)
and it’s worth getting on their email list, with the graduate student branch:

I’d also recommend the U Penn list:

U of Toronto Medieval Studies:

The Institute for Medieval Studies, Leeds, UK:

5. USEFUL BUT LESS IMMEDIATELY SO…

Fabula, la recherche en littérature:

(an eyesore and headache, overwhelming precisely as it is total and comprehensive for the Francophone world)

Conferences (targeted at art historians, but many are medieval studies…)
