UBC-Community Learning Initiative – Graduate Research Assistant

Pay rate: $22.89 to $27.47 per hour, depending on experience

Hours per week: 10 to 20

Length of term: Summer 2013 (May to Aug)

The UBC-Community Learning Initiative is looking for a research assistant (RA) to work with the Manager of Research and Evaluation to help develop a deeper understanding of the outcomes associated with community based experiential learning.

Background: Community-based experiential learning (CBEL) is a pedagogical approach in which students apply their academic learning while working in partnership with community-based partners to address community-identified priorities.  CBEL enhances students’ academic learning and their capacity for global citizenship, while strengthening civil society and advancing sustainability. CBEL is one of the enriched educational experiences that are highlighted in UBC’s Place and Promise strategic plan.

Role: The RA will work directly with the Manager of Research and Evaluation at the UBC- CLI and other members of the CLI Research and Eval team. The RA will be an active participant in on-going research/evaluation projects and will contribute to defining the scope and scale of all projects.

Duties:

The RA may be asked to assist in all stages of the research/evaluation process:

–          Data collection, such as interviews, surveys, focus groups

–          Data analysis, qualitative and/or quantitative

–          Write-ups for internal use within the the UBC-CLI: including lessons learned, next steps, information sheets

–          Literature reviews

The RA will participate in weekly research meetings. During these meetings the team will discuss the current state of research project(s), and collaboratively define the necessary next steps for the coming week.

Qualifications

  1. Currently pursuing a graduate degree in a relevant discipline within the sciences or social sciences (Education, Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology, etc).
  2. Previous experience working on a research project an asset.
  3. Previous experience working with community an asset.
  4. Previous experience with qualitative data analysis an asset.

All of the UBC-CLI’s work includes an aspect of community engagement; having a methodological understanding of community-university relationships is therefore, an asset.
