If you intend to apply, please inform the Graduate and Postdoctoral Research Coordinator at med.research@ubc.ca

The goal of the Constance Livingstone-Friedman and Sydney Friedman Foundation Scholarships in Health Sciences is to provide funding to graduate students or medical residents so that they can pursue a learning opportunity to further their career or to bring new perspectives to the education they have already received.

Award

Between $25,000 to $50,000 annually, open to renewal for one time only.

Requirements and Eligibility

Friedman Scholars are expected to travel to other areas of the world to seek new perspectives and learn from experts in their fields. Travel must be outside of Western Canada (east of Manitoba) and beyond. Learners must engage with a leading figure or group for a minimum period of 3 months.  Open to any UBC graduate student or UBC Medical Resident Trainee in the health related sciences. Health sciences will be interpreted broadly.

For more details, please visit http://med.ubc.ca/friedman-scholars-program/

_____________________________

FRIEDMAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Deadline: Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Background: The Constance Livingstone-Friedman and Sydney Friedman Foundation Scholarships in Health Sciences are named after the first two faculty members in the UBC Faculty of Medicine. Drs. Constance and Sydney Friedman believed that a full well-rounded education requires students to learn from different perspectives and learn from different cultures. The goal of the Friedman Scholar program is to provide funding to graduate students or medical residents so that they can pursue a learning opportunity to further their career or to bring new perspectives to the education they have already received.

Mission: To extend the global reach of UBC graduate students and UBC Medical Resident Trainees and enrich our scholarly community by providing opportunities for our future scholars in the health sciences to learn from global experts in their respective fields.

Scholarships: Scholarships range from $25,000 to $50,000 annually and are open to renewal for one time only. The amount of the scholarship will be at the discretion of the adjudication committee within the above stated range. Each recipient of a Friedman Scholarship will be designated a “Friedman Scholar”.

Requirements and Eligibility: Friedman Scholars are expected to travel to other areas of the world to seek new perspectives and learn from experts in their fields. In order to be considered, travel must be outside of Western Canada (east of Manitoba) and beyond. The scholarships are open to any UBC graduate student or UBC Medical Resident Trainee in the health related sciences. Health sciences will be interpreted broadly; the field of study not only includes the obvious fields such as medicine, dentistry, audiology, nursing etc., but also includes any complementary work being done in other disciplines that relates to the promotion and dissemination of health related education (an example could be an economist working on a new funding model for health care or a botanist working on herbal remedies for a disease). Learners must engage with a leading figure or group for a minimum period of 3 months to gain new knowledge and perspectives in their field and absorb the scholarly culture of the host institution.

Restrictions: The award funds received from this scholarship are to be used for expenses related to an opportunity to learn outside of Western Canada (East of Manitoba) in another culture or institution. None of the scholarship funds shall be used to pay down or reduce current or past educational debt, to pay a personal stipend for the learner, or to pay UBC tuition. While funds from the scholarship may be used for a research opportunity, the emphasis is on the quality of the learning experience through mentorship of a leading scholar or institution. This is not a vehicle for funding research projects.

Student Consultation: Proposed Fee-Laddering‏

To: Students in the Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education has developed a proposal that will permit students who complete a graduate certificate to “ladder” a portion of those fees toward a subsequent, related master’s degree. The anticipated savings in master’s tuition for laddered certificates is approximately 30%.

We are seeking your feedback on this tuition fee proposal, in accordance with the recent UBC Board of Governors’ requirement that new tuition fees be presented to the student body for consultation before they are brought to the Board of Governors for approval. Below you will find a description of a proposed process for laddering graduate certificate tuition into related master’s degrees, and the rationale for this laddering process. If you could please take a moment to consider the proposal and respond to the short survey by Friday, February 28th, it would be greatly appreciated:

http://ogpr.educ.ubc.ca/2014/02/19/student-consultation-fee-laddering-proposal/

Thank you for your interest and assistance,

Beth Haverkamp

GSS Weekly Newsletter

From: Ngwatilo Mawiyoo [mailto:communications@gss.ubc.ca]
Subject: GSS Weekly Newsletter

Dear Graduate Students,

I trust you’re finding the extra time this Reading week useful. If you meant to watch any of the games at the Winter Olympics and haven’t, you have until this weekend to do so, and then that’s it for four years. Just so you know.

GSS Social & Recreational:
– Let’s go Ski at Whistler on March 9th! Deadline to register is March 1st, and as always, spots fill up fast!

– The GSS Salsa Night is ON! Tickets are on sale for our March 7th event!  Whether you’ve never stepped foot on a dance floor in your life, or are fluent in the language of dance, this event has something for you! We’ve lined up a pro grade salsa lesson, and much musical and liquid inspiration to guarantee a good night! We’re also meditating daily – which is like – necessary for good vibes, right… All are welcome for the low low ticket price of just $5.

GSS Advocacy:
– The Canadian government’s Federal Skilled Worker Program has an eligibility stream that is open to international students who are pursuing or who have completed doctoral (PhD) studies at Canadian institutions. The GSS would like offer you another opportunity to share your experience with the program in order to advocate for the changes needed to help the program work efficiently. Please do so by filling out this super quick survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XRNDL3D
Contact vpexternal@gss.ubc.ca with any follow up questions or issues you may have.

– BC’s balanced budget ignores the needs of students at post-secondary institutions.
The GSS through the public consultation process submitted a document highlighting our needs to the budget select standing committee. This committee recommended a number of investments in post-secondary education in BC. Sadly this week’s budget did not incorporate the Graduate Provincial Scholarship and other recommendations within our submission. Your GSS will continue to advocate on your behalf to this government, highlighting why our education matters to this province and this economy moving forward.

GSS + UBC Sustainability:
– UBC is developing a 20-year Sustainability Strategy for the Vancouver campus. As part of the consultation process with faculty, staff, students and the community, you are invited to a graduate student workshop on February 27th, 4-5.30pm at the Policy Labs in the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (Policy Labs – ground floor). Register Here. Food will be provided. Please do complete the 8-minute survey to enter to win an iPad Mini! The workshops are your opportunity to hear proposed ideas for sustainability at UBC and to provide feedback on the draft strategic directions across (1) teaching, learning, research, (2) operations and infrastructure, and (3) community.
Contact Marko Pajalic for more information or visit http://sustain.ubc.ca/conversations2034.

That’s it from us. Thanks for reading!
