This blog will consist of my journey in the course ENG 301: Technical Writing in University of British Columbia. ENG 301 is all about studying the principles of communication in a professional setting. This includes writing proposals, abstracts, blogs, application packages and many more. It is taught by UBC’s very own, Erika Paterson, and supplemented by the book Technical Writing.
There is 3 units in this course which are as follows:
Unit 1: Principles, Practices and People – includes getting to know the instructor and classmates online, building the online sites, being introduced to the principles of technical and business writing.
Unit 2: Designing a Report Proposal; Defining Terms with Audience in Mind – this is where we start our formal report project, where we design and submit a report proposal to our writing team, followed a peer review of those proposals as well as sending memos to the instructor that summarises our partner’s proposal.
Unit 3: Designing a Report Outline & Draft; Building your Resume and Job Application skills – our formal project report will then be used for us to draft a formal outline. We will also get the chance to make a full job application package to be posted on our Linked-in site to attract actual job seekers.
Unit 4: Drafting the Formal Report; Peer Review and Final Report; developing networking strategies – includes rewriting our formal report, specifically focusing on the organization, evidence, audience and style. We will also learn to develop our networking skills and complete our application assignments.
My expectation for this course is to be able to increase my skills in professional writing. I hope that this course will teach me how to present myself professionally and respectfully to future job seekers and communicate my competencies effectively through writing.
