Dear TechniWriters,

As advised for Assignment 2:2, I have compiled a list of – what I believe to be – the ten best practices for Linkedin use. Through my research, I feel that applying these ten suggestions will generate effective results and boost Linkedin profile productivity.

  1. Write an engaging profile: provide interesting information, a good photo, and something that stands out about you.
  2. Highlight your experiences in your summary: Allow for a reader to get to know you and your experience right away, so they are eager to read on.
  3. Showcase all your skills: You may think that only certain skills pertain to the job market. Add all of your skill sets – you never know if an employer is looking for something specific that you can provide, that others can’t.
  4. Don’t use generic phrases or buzzwords: Many looking for work will say that they are “passionate, experienced, and focused”. Try to use exciting language to stand out.
  5. When communicating with others, be specific: Add personal messages and tell others exactly what you are looking for. This allows for more efficient correspondence.
  6. Update your status: Change your Linkedin status often so that your network will keep you in their mind.
  7. Make connections, but not too many: Having too few connections does not look appealing for employers, but adding people you don’t know (who reject your request)  can result in your profile being shut down.
  8. Don’t overdo it: Simple, clean, and effective is better than overwhelming and messy.
  9. Be available: Make sure you have added all the ways for people to contact you.
  10. Use target job descriptions to enhance your profile: Look at jobs that you are interested in – what words are they using? Use those words in your profile.

These practices help users of Linkedin create the best versions of their profiles and create advantageous results. Please let me know if you have questions regarding these strategies. I look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest regards,

Jenny Bachynski
