The Truth About Stories

Once long ago, In a magical kingdom where all the unfinished books of author are stuck together in a sort of purgatory.  There was one small book, that wanted so badly to leave this new hell that he found himself in.  He tried everything he could, tried climbing the walls, trying to dig a ditch, and even tried to fight the guards that keep these books stuck.  Then one day the book came up with a crazy idea that he thought might actually work!  He thought if he could finish his story that he might be freed of this prison of forgotten stories.

He asked all the other books around him, they would start telling their stories but then would stop right at the end.  So the little book tried piecing other stories together, he thought that he could use other stories to finish his own.  He soon realized that there was no ending to the story he had created, he was stuck in this loop of finishing a story.  And as soon as he would almost finish his story he would forgot the middle or the beginning.  The little book was stuck here in this loop forever.

He tried to get the help of the eldest book he could find, and the elder told him “you are unable to finish your book, because there is no story, the only story is stuck in your authors mind and you are unable to unlock it.  Only the author is able to tell the story”

So there were never of these narratives told. They were all forgotten….Nothing was left to say or remember…..

This is my baby (matching for mothers day)

The rest of my family told me to “stay in school, you shouldn’t be a writer” and personally I found it extremely challenging.  In university I feel like none of my courses have ever challenged any of my creative writing skills, it is mostly just essay writing.  So I feel like my skills are severely under developed.

I used this link because I feel like the public library is the solution to the book purgatory problem.

Post 1:2 Question 6

I found that the book of J. Edward Chamberlin was quite fascinating will the imagery and symbolic stories.  In the last chapter I found that the story of the bears and the valley, the painters, and the borders were really interesting and thought provoking.

The story of the bears, I do actually wondering if this has some connotation of the Okanagan Valley, because I believe that Kelowna in the First Nations Language means Grizzly Bear.  http://www.tourismkelowna.com/about/history/ Which of course I think is really interesting and thought provoking but that this because I live here.  I think that it is interesting that these bears would take away the fertile lands from the people that lived there because they became lazy and did not keep the same traditions of the ancestors.  It is interesting that many people were killed in this process of the landslide and the people got their land back but it was never the same as it was before. It is like there was a form of punishment to these people and the rest of their families that were to come on that land.

The painters I thought was something of a mind twist, truths that are not really truths.  With painting the ships the one painter knew exactly what color the ship had to be, while the other one did not so he chooses a completely different color that he was not supposed to.  I think this is interesting because most people need everything organized in a specific way and when things do not go that specific way they get all flustered and confused.  Even though it is not going to cause any actual kind of harm to the person if plans do not turn out exactly the way they are planned.  It is quite unfortunate that people are so guarded like this.  I should not say it is unfortunate, because I am one of those people.  If something goes wrong, I cannot see past a mistake or a mess, I need to fix it, I cannot think about carrying out a task a different way.

I also think that when the author talks about borders it is really important because nowadays there is a huge distinction between mine and yours.  People do not share well.  These borders that people make between possessions will only doom us in the end.  It is not like you can take it with you when you die.  People are trapped in these material goods ruts and cannot get out.  They have to have the most and be the best.  I think that this comes around to the stories of the bears.  People have become lazy and just want want want.  They no longer care what they need, or how they get it.  Before it was all about what people needed and how they could use the world around them in a peaceful way to get it.  It was not about wants it was basic primary needs like food and shelter.

Off topic, I wonder if the Legend of Ogopogo might have a cool story like the bears.  http://www.tourismkelowna.com/about/ogopogo/

Assignment 1:1My

Welcome Readers,

My name is Laryssa Legan, originally I am from Edmonton Alberta and then relocated to Kelowna in 2013.  I did just finish my third year of arts at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna, and unfortunately I just finished my first ever Indigenous study class.  I think that the fact that it took this long for me to be exposed to these classes is wrong,  I think the school needs to have more of these classes, and I think that they need to promote them.  I also had a thought that it actually should be a requirement to graduate.  I find that in Kelowna that the Indigenous population and culture is so important, the culture is everywhere in Kelowna and widely celebrated! http://www.syilx.org This is the website for the Okanagan Nation Alliance.  When I lived in Edmonton the First Nations culture was not seen at all.  So I now see how important to have the mix of the culture is.

My expectations for this course is to shine more light on the mix of the cultures  in Canada and how important they are. I think that it will be equally important to watch the course syllabus to keep up with all the assignments.  And what the blog posts are about. https://blogs.ubc.ca/courseblogsis_ubc_engl_470a_99c_2014wc_44216-sis_ubc_engl_470a_99c_2014wc_44216_2517104_1/course-objectives/
