MudWatt – Powerful Mud!

Probably the only way to get me to invest in having my kids play with mud… This successful pitch on Kickstarter caught my attention: It’s “green”, it’s affordable and even though it has extra amazing educational abilities when paired with the MudWatt app, kids from lower level income families and schools can also benefit from this educational kit even without the app. The end result, “clean energy from mud”, will be truly POWERful, maybe even save the world…

I would not invest in this pitch as is, though I think there is potential to expand this idea into a multi-component sustainability science kit.

The pitch started of weak seeing as it was a home video with a low impact introduction and likely a low production budget, but I appreciated the product as someone who takes high interest in sustainability education. The target audience seems to be teachers as they mentioned that the first trials and prototypes were tested in a classroom setting with students. The product itself is simple as were the explanations that described the learning and experience. I wish they shared more tangible facts about the importance of the product, why putting ketchup into the soil is worth experimenting, and gave a full picture of what their app offers.

From the perspective of an investor, there is very little information about the impact the product can have in the educational world, competition in the market, and direction of the product. Is it just a battery that can replace your analog clock in 2 months, or will there be extra components introduced to further the learning? All in all, there are definitely missing pieces to this pitch but the concept of a “sustainability science kit” could have potential.
