Dylan Field – Co-founder and CEO of Figma

Venture Description:

Figma is a cloud-based design tool that allows team collaborative designs. Similar to many other online design tool in functionality and features, Figma simplifies the tools and design process but more productive and effective than other programs at helping designers to work collaboratively and efficiently. Figma is founded by Dylan Field, who is a co-founder with Evan Wallace in 2012. As a Thiel Fellow, Field believed “creativity is the new productivity and they built this platform to tear down the walls around the rigid design process.

With the financial support from the Thiel Fellowship, they initially set their plan on developing a photo editing application. Yet they did not settle for less but strive for the best by ambitiously dreaming on building the next evolution of Photoshop into a real-time collaboration tool. First they identified existing gap in the current competitors in the market; then they tackle the identified problem and modified with their innovations.

I have used Figma is various context, both academically and professionally. I have truly experienced their ability to cooperate with each other and they tried to facilitate collaboration. Figma is useful in the classroom. The online whiteboard gives student an open area to express, to be vocal and creative about their ideas.Comparing Figma to the other collaborative platform, even though they look more or less the same in terms of function, one thing Figma is better than the others are which they promote real collaboration. Figma allows multiples files to work in one single document, simulating the real life situation that multiple people on the team are working towards the same project. Whereas the other platforms allow only single file working together at the same time and the other platform focuses less on the detailed part. This is what makes Figma standing out from the other platform.
