Venture Pitch: Current

Howdy! Below is my elevator pitch for Current, a microcredential management platform that hosts easy-to-tailor, stackable templates on locally relevant, climate-related topics. You can also view my elevator pitch, along with my venture pitch here on Canvas (approx 8 minute read-time).

Looking forward to your feedback!

Kendal presents a very compelling idea for a business that is directly related to a major current topical issue: climate change. The marketing model of being able to access government funds is certainly relevant and taps into a major need for both communities and local governments to move forward with not only a business venture, but with an environmental Venture which will ultimately enhance the sustainability of the planet. One wonders if a partnership with the United Nations, Greenpeace and potentially some translation for offering this internationally could also be a future avenue for Current.

FEEDBACK: This is a very good idea and the presentation is detailed, however, it is unclear what the business model is and what the projected ROI is. Otherwise, it is a compelling venture indeed.

Thanks for your feedback, Safa! I think having more details on the business model and project ROI is a great idea and would help evaluators. Thanks again!

Hi Kendal, great pitch! There is clear and compelling explanation to justify the product’s importance, relevance, and necessity. The identified goals that go beyond profit and towards genuinely helping to make the world better differentiate your venture in an impactful way. Great application of community based and microlearning as a viable solution to a real and urgent problem. As an aside the Elevator Pitch and Canva venture pitch are clean and aesthetically pleasing to engage with, which makes me feel like I am getting behind a clear, very well organized, and marketable venture. In addressing how the curriculum will be developed and how participation will be incentivized you cover a lot of key questions. This market will obviously be growing out of necessity, and you mention public capital available. I like your approach in requesting the full funds necessary to develop and market the platform – this was something I struggled with in my own venture, but I think especially as you justify the need for Current to support the greater good of society investors could also view it as philanthropy rather than a venture where they have return revenue as the key focus. As an EVA I would definitely support this venture.

REVIEW: The Current is fantastic! I was recently in Costa Rica discussing Harm Reduction in Health. Your project combines climate change, health, and education. Moreover, Current addresses a need not met globally. I wonder if there is space for partnership and investments. I suggest associating climate-related topics with other conditions that afflict people and the environment.
We are setting up a hub on Harm Reduction in Brazil with a focus and relevant themes for the entire American continent, and Current is aligned with this idea and with the investment potential within those imagined by the hub. Microcredentials are essential to preserving the individual and the environment. I believe that Current and climate change topics would combine very well with other cross-cutting health topics such as smoking, prevention, and obesity.
Congratulations, and let me know if it makes sense for a future discussion about a partnership.

Hi Alexei – thank you so much for your feedback! It’s very cool to hear you think this is a worthwhile venture, and I really appreciate your suggestion in combining this with other community-based education topics such as harm reduction (sounds like a super neat project you are involved in too!). This is likely something I will continue to think about as it is directly related to my work (I currently do landowner outreach for ways they can be better land stewards) so will absolutely reach out if I end up spending more time building this out.. it would be really neat to include other aspects as you’ve mentioned. Thank you so much!

REVIEW: Good pitch! I loved the idea and I agree that environmental protection is a much needed topic to be addressed. It would be helpful that if there is specific activities/teaching example provided in the pitch for the investor to understand the actual action plan of Current. Having some concrete ideas would be effective for investors to review and make their decisions. Overall, I think this is a very solid project and attractive pitch. I would have invested in it.

    Hey Kendal,
REVIEW: Thank you for your pitch! I really liked how you were able to incorporate climate change, health, and education into your proposal as these are vital subjects to be covered in schools. Both your elevator and venture pitch were flawless and professional; they provided the information needed for investors without overloading them. For myself, I could have used a bit more of a definition of microcredentials (I’m good now, I googled!), but other than that I would wholeheartedly invest in this opportunity!

    Well done!

    Greg

Review/Feedback: What a beautiful presentation! I have not seen a pitch in Canva before, and it looks great and make the venture even more enticing! Your idea about micro-credential learning being focused on environmental areas is interesting. Although I love the passion and the idea, as a venture, I have trouble believing that it will be able to grow with such a narrow area of interest. What is the opportunity for growth? How will the venture continue to grow and change? I think more explanation here will help convince investors in the viability of the venture and the value of their investment.

REVIEW: Hi Kendal, it was a pleasure looking through your elevator and venture pitch! Microcredentials are something that I think is very pertinent to modern learning, especially with major companies beginning to accept them from a variety of sources (eg. Google accepting Coursera credentials). Your venture pitch very clearly stated the problems that communities across Canada are facing when it comes to fighting climate change at local levels. Your solution is articulated well, and the idea of partnering with some of the major stakeholders in the climate fight (hydro, gas and power companies) is a clever way to further encourage communities to change attitudes and behaviours that make a difference. Another potential income stream may be partnering with environmentally responsible companies (eg solar panel installers) who pay Current to deliver educationally relevant micro courses related to the industry they do their business in. Do you foresee Current remaining a more community based platform, or something that can offer tailored conservation content for corporations and their employees as well to shift the mindset at a greater scale? I appreciate you sharing your venture pitch, and I would definitely consider this as a venture with great potential and would invest in it.
