Off-Grid Simulation App – Land Lab Simulator

The Land Lab Simulator is a powerful design app to help you rapidly build virtual off-grid systems blueprints for providing food, water, energy, sanitation, and shelter. This app will teach you how these systems work by allowing you to drag-and-drop real-life systems to provide for your needs. Every off-grid system in this app exists today (to purchase or DIY). If you are interested in permaculture, solar power, gardening, passive shelters, tiny homes, biogas, composting, regenerative agriculture, and independent living, this simulator app was built for you.

Yes, I would invest in this venture. The pitch did a great job of telling the story of why a sustainable way of living is needed in our society and how it is possible to achieve it. In their pitch video, they clearly demonstrated the pain point (with great visuals and factual numbers) and how their lab simulator/ land lab provides a solution. It is very clear about who they are buyers and they have reached their buyers somewhat successfully through their social media platforms. For people who want to explore off-grid living and do not know where to start (like me), this is a great simulation tool that encourages them to learn, design, and interact virtually with circular systems and sustainable local living.

What I also love about this simulation app is its inclusiveness. First of all, it is designed for all ages, opening up the possibilities for it to be used as an educational tool in K-12 classrooms. Secondly, it is designed globally, meaning that people around the world can test how off-grid living can be achievable in areas with distinct geographical features.

I would love to know more about the competency of their teams, their data collection process, and to what extent the simulator reflects the real experience in their land labs.

Yes I would invest in this venture. In my personal life I take sustainability very seriously and am always looking for ways to tie technology with sustainability and new practices. Although there was no video to introduce me to the concept from the creators, by looking on Kickstarter, their website, and some videos on YouTube, I was able to ascertain the reach that this app could have. I would invest in this because it is marketable to many different industries as well as individuals and it is a very applicable solution to a problem that will only increase in demand for answers in the coming decades.
Their different leveled plans are effective, even as it is in the beta testing phase, to show that this could be scaled to be used in schools, or someone who is looking to make changes to their personal homes.
I believe this is a very fascinating investment opportunity and the sky is the limit for how far reaching this product could be.

YES, I would invest in this product based on the video pitch. I think the strengths outweigh the weaknesses and I can insert my knowledge to further the product. That being said, I still have some questions, see my full analysis below:

    Positive Signs:

The CEO and team address their credibility in the video based on their field work (they claim to test the solutions in real life). Not addressed by the pitch itself, but the concept of a viable simulation with real connections to purchasable solutions seems to be quite novel. The apparent novelty would provide space in several markets in my opinion (including education), but the market was vaguely referenced in the pitch as their social media following or any environmentally conscious citizen. Concept-wise, the homework has been done; the pain point was identified and backed by statistics and a compelling globally-applicable solution was pitched with visuals of the working product. The end game is clear, people will be using this product to either understand how sustainability and affordability are connected OR will be using it to create models for future sustainable building projects.

    Room for Improvement:

The solutions were pitched to citizens/buyers, not investors interested in making money. It is difficult from the video pitch alone to discern how this product would be profitable. It seems like a cost to subscribe to the product and perhaps commission from affiliate links for purchasing products would be some revenue streams. This leaves me with some questions. The pitch does not include the use of their investor money, but it is included on their longer-form written pitch.

Yes – After having read their campaign and watched their videos, I would invest in this venture. The idea of sustainability seems to be a popular topic considering the growing public concern regarding climate change. This is the ultimate lifestyle for those trying to develop sustainable habits; this app seems to offer a user-friendly experience on how to achieve these goals. Not only that, it is intriguing to basement-suite dwellers like myself when it offers an alternative to spending “~$1.7 million over 30 years to pay for their mortgage, utilities, car expenses, insurance, and food.” With the growing housing crisis as of late, it is fitting for a product like this one to come on to the scene and offer viable solutions for those feeling bleak about their future.
Having spent a bit of time on their website, I got the impression that their team is made up of passionate individuals that care about their work. Their content is inspiring and they provide excellent feedback to customer questions/concerns.

Yes, I would invest. For me, the interest was immediate. I was interested in the product, it was clearly defined and the impact was made very clear. The bottom line was explained early and clearly. Also, it was obvious who the video was aiming at (everybody/anyone interested in sustainable off-grid). I think that the investing element was aimed at the end-users and customers. This is not a program that is aimed at big industries but rather at empowering individuals to achieve something that might seem daunting initially. I think the motivation of the company is clear – it is passion for the environment and they took that approach for advertising, which I think is smart.
