Opportunity horizon: Microlearning – a modern approach to learning

Posted in Market Projections

Microlearning delivers education content in small, focused units (typically between 2-7 minutes), designed for just-in-time learning and reinforcement. Each module is designed around a specific learning objective, making the content concise, targeted and easy to digest.

Market size and growth

Microlearning is rapidly gaining traction worldwide. According to Mordor Intelligence, the market is expected to grow from USD 2.96 billion in 2025 to USD 5.49 billion by 2030 (CAGR: 13.1%). IMARC Group projects a rise from USD 2.6 billion in 2024 to USD 6.8 billion by 2033 (CAGR: 11.2%). Technavio forecasts an additional USD 3.14 billion in value from 2025 to 2029, with a CAGR of 15%.

Key drivers and trends

  • Mobile-first learning preferences: 75% of Gen Z’ers prefer to use a smartphone
  • Shortened attention span: after COVID, individuals recall only 20% to 30% of the contents
  • Corporate training demands: efficiency, accessibility and digital infrastructure integration are critical
  • Remote work: increase demand for flexible, accessible, and effective training solutions

Value for educators, learning technology specialists and ventures

For instructional designers, microlearning addresses short attention spans by incorporating interactive methods, such as simulations or gamification. This helps educators tailor each chapter / episode to focus on specific learning outcomes, ensuring that knowledge acquisition is targeted and efficient. However, market projections often conflate true microlearning with merely “short videos” or “chunked content”, leading to inflated estimates.

Microlearning also supports digital infrastructure, enhancing traditional learning through language apps (think Duolingo), virtual tutoring, and video conferencing. Gamification further boosts engagement and value creation. Data-driven insights aid strategic decisions regarding platform selection and content development.

Companies are shifting towards a skill-based hiring process and continue to upskill them internally. Awareness of talent development is growing, yet L&D budgets remain conservative. Microlearning offers an efficient and economical solution, although maintaining learner motivation remains challenging, particularly with compliance-focused training.

    Hey Annie,

I echo the readability sentiment that others have pointed out here. I totally agree with the opportunity of microlearning. I’ve had many colleagues comment on being able to increase their competencies or update themselves in the field that they’re in. They wish they had months to do a class but with ongoing commitments to work and family, it’s hard to take time off to pause everything to study.

Those who have taken microlearning certificates have been appreciated and found that it’s been helpful in their day to day jobs (https://www.technavio.com/report/microlearning-market-industry-analysis). I think there is a future in microlearning as we see increases in the tempo of technological advances that we have to keep up in. Much appreciated for you sharing this information.
