Introduction

Welcome to the ETEC 522 Augmented Reality (AR) for Kindergarten to Grade 12 Open Education Resource (OER). We are pleased to provide you with an introduction into what Visual Intensive Learning is and then zero in on Augmented Reality as a current form of Visual Intensive Learning that is beginning to gain precedence in the educational realm. The intent of this OER is to introduce you to what AR is and to provide you with multiple examples of AR and ways in which to apply AR to enhance learning environments. We hope the interactions built into this OER will assist you in developing your understanding of AR and give you a chance to explore and begin to work with different AR resources available for learning.

Please refer to the following list which explains how to proceed through this OER`s learning opportunities:

  1. Read through Introducing the AR Team which is found on this page.
  2. Read through the tab What is AR? and watch the videos.
  3. Read through the tab AR in the classroom and watch the videos.  Watch the extra videos at the end of the page if you so desire.
  4. Read through the tab Venture Analysis of AR.
  5. Complete some of the activities found under the Interactivities tab.
  6. Review the Pilot Reflection, which provides insight gained from piloting this resource.

Introducing the AR Team

Jenny Brown
I am a Health Education Consultant within Alberta Health Services. I am always keen to discover and be the cheerleader for new technologies that could be used within our department and for our clients. Augmented Reality is a technology that I think is too new to really grasp how it could impact learning in the future but hopefully our resources will help shed light on its potential in K-12 classroom settings.

Jhodi Leong
Hi everyone, my name is Jhodi Leong and I currently reside in Calgary, AB.  I am a high school mathematics teacher for the Calgary Board of Education.  This is my second year teaching, so I am still learning all sorts of new stuff!  I am very interested in how to incorporate technology into my classroom, so I have quite enjoyed all of my MET courses.  This is my fourth course and has been one of the most interesting to date!  I hope that all of you enjoy our activities this week and have fun learning about AR!

Manny Loyla
Hi all, I currently work as a Math/Science/P.E. teacher in an alternate secondary school in Surrey, British Columbia. Increasing student engagement has been a long term goal of mine and I have found technology to be a helpful tool in raising student interest. Although still in its infancy stages, I believe that there is huge potential for AR technology.

Nureen Visram
Hi, my name is Nureen Visram. I am currently a Paced Learning Program Teacher in Calgary, Alberta. I have been working in Special Education for five years. I have found technology is the an excellent resources for my students because they understand the content better and are engaged due to the visual and interactive properties. Educational Technology  Augmented reality is still a very new concept but it seems to have a lot of potential; especially for teaching and learning. I hope you learn something new this week and enjoy the activities we have planned for you.

Patrick Pichette

Hi, my name is Patrick Pichette.  I teach IT courses at a French Catholic high school in Ottawa, Ontario.  As a technology specialist at our school, I often try to keep pace with the multitude of offerings and new technology on the horizon. Augmented reality appears to have some interesting potential that I could see as being beneficial in the next few years.  Although I have some fears on the gimmicky aspect of Augmented Reality, I will definitely be keeping an eye on how companies choose to implement the technology in future educational capacities.
