Daylio – Data Mining to Improve Self-Awareness

This is a resource I was shown a couple of years ago when on the topic of mindfulness in the classroom.

Daylio is an intuitive, user-friendly, easy to use way to record your mood. This can have applications outside of the classroom of course but in terms of student benefit- consider students tracking their mood during each subject area then reflecting on the data weekly/monthly etc.

A simple tool to help students to learn to self-regulate. The image below gives you a general idea of the look of the app, imagine the student tracking moods to inform goal setting/ emotional regulation etc.

I reviewed the app’s privacy policy and was surprised by its transparency. According to the policy (https://faq.daylio.net/article/15-privacy-policy), the app does not require users to create an online account, ensuring that its data is not stored by default online. Instead, the data is stored locally on the user’s device, with an option to backup over the cloud. As the app is based in Europe, I wonder how this app complies with our Canadian health information privacy laws, i.e. The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

In the original post, the author describes the potential for students to use the app to self-regulate. I’d be interested in a pilot project, to see how students could track and visualize their data. In my undergrad, our Information Design course, we were instructed to monitor a habit (eating, sleeping, TV watching, etc.) and present it in a compelling format.

Many designers have taken this mindset to great lengths – Nicholas Felton, a designer is infamous for his personal annual reports, spanning 10 years of data (https://create.adobe.com/2016/3/16/designing_with_data_nicholas_felton.html) and even created his own recording app (http://reporter-app.com/).
