With information overstimulation, it is easy to shift our attention from one task to the other without thinking much to it. The so-called multitasking is making us more exhausting rather than more efficient. Before switching to WFH, I used to spend roughly 3 hours daily just commute so I spent most of my time on the bus/skytrain to read and to write. Last October, I finally decided it was time to have data on my phone and since then, I found myself spending less time writing and more time on browsing Reddit and looking at memes. I don’t seem to “have the time” to write anymore because I can just pull out my phone and start reading news while waiting for the bus.
The original author of the post quoted Lynda Barry on the three elements for creativity and they were loneliness, boredom, and uncertainty. When we occupy our days with different stimulations we eliminate those elements. The App 1 Second Everyday encourages users to record 1 second video every day and the users can chronologically edit the video to a minute or two in length. For some, the mental block of “I must do something right or I won’t do it at all”, this app introduces a more gradual (achievable) transition to finish a project.
