Podcasts for Formal Education

By Tanya on June 24, 2018

For my Analytical Publishing Project I am focusing on using podcasts in formal education. To share this information with you I have gone meta and developed a podcast to give you this information, which includes their relevance to the mobile world, research on benefits and drawbacks, some snippets of interviews with an educational designers, and an analysis on the implication of the tech. I’ve even included some tips and tools! You will find the podcast housed on this webpage: https://podcastanalysis.weebly.com/

Happy Listening!

I really enjoyed this podcast. Great ideas for educators. Uploading material to make sure it’s all there would certainly increase engagement for some and it would, as was said in this podcast, promote consistency, so that’s great too. Since COVID I started posting videos to Youtube to (try to) keep my students engaged. One kid told me that she would listen to those videos as if they were podcats, and so that was a real moment for me. I’m going to explore podcasting as a means of content delivery a lot more in the future.

While I was in my undergrad, I could not focus in lecture halls. The professor standing in the front with or without a PowerPoint projected on the screen did not engage me. I would drift to whatever device was in front of me. Fast forward into adulthood, and I find myself choosing podcasts to listen to while I am completing mundane chores and errands. Does the modern-day student enjoy podcasts? Is this something that they would prefer to engage in when reviewing materials for an upcoming test? Instead of reading instructions, would students prefer to hear them? I find this topic very relevant to online and remote learning. Traditional online courses were text-heavy that students had difficulty engaging. How would it be different if they could listen to the material from their textbook read aloud by someone how is knowledgeable and passionate? I believe with the popularity of Audible and other apps, this topic should definitely be explored further.
