Investopedia: Learning about Investment

Investopedia is an investment simulation program that gives students the opportunity to interact with the stock market while using play money. The program follows the opening and closing times of the real stock market and the stock prices are updated with a 15 minute delay from the real-time prices. The teacher is able to create a private game and choose which stock market (Canadian, American, or both) to focus on. The teacher can set how much money each person starts with and limit how much of one stock the student can own. Through the program, students learn about different aspects of investment such as principal, interest, yields, and trades. The gamified aspect is that students can track how they’re doing compared to their peers through the ranking system. Extending from the game, educators can talk to their students about risk tolerance and the importance of a diversified portfolio.
