The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a worldwide organization working toward improving access to information and communication technologies for all. While this specialized agency of the United Nations has been in existence for many years, their work is of particular importance now, as the world moves forward with 5G network development. This article: https://digital-world.itu.int/entering-the-5g-era-demand-deployment-and-disquiet/ summarizes a discussion at the ITU’s annual “Digital World” summit.
Part of this discussion involved equity and accessibility, and key messages include:
“Satellite can ensure all the gains of 5G are evenly distributed, making cloudification concepts available to all.”
“With the right mix of technology, we can achieve the promise of 5G and close the digital divide, making sure technology can bring about a more equitable society.”
“The technology is ready, but without cooperation between government, citizens and the private sector, we won’t be able to make it available to everyone, everywhere.”
As mobile culture becomes more and more embedded in our daily lives, it becomes more and more important that everyone is able to be a part of it. Is this possible? Are the key players willing to work together to achieve it?
