Newsela: Differential learning on the go

Mobile technologies will provide support to teachers in applying the differentiated learning framework more easily. Educators recognize that differentiating learning and assessment is useful to adopt in day-to-day teaching and but it’s really difficult to practice, “Human beings differ from one another and there is absolutely no reason to teach and assess all individuals in the identical way. Rather, in the future, good practice should particularize the modes of presentation as well as the manner of assessment as much as feasible; and that individuation should be based on our understanding of the intellectual profiles of individual learners.” (Medium 2016)

One exemplary way of differentiating through mobile is Newslea.

Newsela is an app that provides engaging articles that are accessible for all reading abilities.

Most people read on the go – commuting, sitting on a park bench, a coffeshop etc. Newslea broke the mold by creating articles for all reading levels. All students can discuss the content since they digested the same content but at different reading levels – no student stigmas based on abilities attached.

In the below link, Newslea researched differentiation in the classroom and why it’s important, and how technologies will facilitate the process.
