In order to have mobile devices in the classroom not be a distraction, we need to leverage them and use them in such a way to as to enhance learning. An emerging trend in both online and traditional education is the concept of the active learning. Mobile technologies are being used to engage students in active learning through a category of software called Student Response Systems. Think of these systems (be they apps or dedicated clickers) as a cross between a Jeopardy answer button and an bar trivia console. These devices and apps allow teachers to interject surveys, mini-quizzes, and games into the stream of a lesson without necessarily interrupting the flow of the lesson. Through this active engagement with the materials and some elements of gamification, the students are more engaged and invested in the lesson and have measurably better outcomes.
