Shark Tracker – Bring the Dark Depths to Light

OCEARCH is a global non-profit organization using innovative technology and invaluable collaboration and connection to conducting unprecedented research on our ocean’s giants. Their app, “Shark Tracker” allows users to track tagged animals (sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, sea lions, and more) in real-time! Amongst other features, it allows users to learn about a specific animal, their name, their statistics, where they have travelled since being marked, when they last surfaced, how close they are to other animals being tracked and how close they are to the user! It is a networking community where users can have discussions about their favourite animals, advocate for change or donate to support further OCEARCH efforts. Their mission is to collect previously unattainable data “to accelerate the ocean’s return to balance and abundance through fearless innovations…. using unique collaborations of individuals and organizations.”

This app, (along with any technology that tracks species in real-time), has phenomenal educational potential, abling the global community to gain knowledge and grow empathy for animals – a vital attribute for making change. It is pretty special for a user to feel like they “know” these animals; pulling the audience in with an element of excitement, to see what their favourite animal will do next!

Thanks for sharing Tegan. Have you integrated this into your curriculum? If so, what was the response?

Hi Charles, I have not formally used the app in my curriculum, I have only taught BC Science 10 (DNA), Math 9/10, and Learning Strategies since it was introduced to me. I have certainly introduced the app to the students though, and it has been a hit. Because of the app, I have students who will stop me in the hall and tell me about “their” shark, turtle, etc., students who have become involved in our “Water is Life” program, and others who have found similar apps that follow endangered species. It has been very exciting to see the impact. The app really does make the interaction feel personal and connected.
