A1 – Digital Credential Platforms

I was originally planning to focus on micro-credentials but instead I pivoted to explore ‘digital credential platforms’. The topic got me thinking about all the times I’ve had to track down (and request) transcripts for a new job, or dig a hardcopy credential out of the closet to scan and send somewhere. (Maybe part of the reason this topic was appealing is because I need better personal document/information management strategies!) But, even so, wouldn’t it be handy if there was a standard and secure way to store and share this kind of documentation? Perhaps there are add-on opportunities too.

To make the content of this assignment a bit more flexible (and mobile), I’ve provided a video (which is the primary way I envisioned the assignment), but also an audio-only version (in case you prefer to download and listen while you’re doing other things) and a transcript, in case you just prefer to read through it.

    Hi Sally,
I have to admit that this is something I knew very little about and feel much better-informed now, so thank you! It does seem like a much more practical system, as I love the idea of having a much more convenient way to access one’s credentials. Getting them sent by mail from one institution to another does seem so antiquated now! I am glad you brought up security as a concern, as that would be my main apprehension about this product.
Thank you again for your analysis, Sally,
    KJ

    Hi Sally,

I really enjoyed your presentation and it is definitely something that would serve to eliminate the bureaucracy regarding accessing, defining and valuing different transcripts. The concept of a digital credential platform in the form of a digital wallet is much needed. I do feel that having one place to access these transcripts as well as references as you have mentioned would alleviate some of the difficulties I know I have had in presenting and valuing my credentials. As you mentioned it would also standardize newer credentials in a manageable and convenient storage platform. However, as one of your concerns was in valuing credentials we are also creating a platform that we use to manage our social capital by. As much as I would appreciate an easily accessible credential wallet, would this lead to a streamlined and convenient platform? or would it ‘simply create more pathways to a confusing and ever changing variety of credentials’. I am apprehensive but I am hopeful.
