Cospaces Edu – Another Look

Cospaces Edu is a powerful website that enables students to explore and create VR and AR worlds. Although this website and app was mentioned in this post (CoSpaces Edu | ETEC523: Mobile and Open Learning (ubc.ca)) I think it is worth a second look.

In the classroom, students can create worlds in VR that are based on a stock library of 3D objects. What really takes this site to the next level is the ability to interact with these worlds through Scratch-like Codeblocks. While the basic blocks included with free accounts allow for some interaction, the PRO blocks unlocked with the paid version afford the ability to create more detailed worlds and games.

Once the 3D world is created, they can interact with the world through a web browser in a first person perspective, or by downloading the app on to a phone or mobile device. On the mobile device, the objects in the world can be viewed in VR (with the use of a Google Cardboard type device) or in AR with a flat surface.

Numerous shared projects exist in the gallery to explore as well.

I have some experience with this website, before they added some of the AR features that are available now. My students were far more engaged with creating a 3D world that could be coded than I ever found them with Scratch. Creating games and puzzles for their classmates to solve provided some excellent motivation. Creating puzzles that were too difficult, or too easy were discouraged by their peers as being “uninteresting.”

From recreating physics experiments to creating a virtual museum, the possibilities of Cospaces beg to be explored.

I have also used CoSpaces before, and I agree with you that it has a lot potential, from helping students learn about the Cartesian coordinate system in a more hands-on way, to recreating important scenes from novels. I have never used the AR features before and would like to learn more about them. We used CoSpaces in my ETEC 544 course to create an escape room-type video game based on the EAL curriculum. It was interesting being able to import 3D models, which allowed for many more creative options. A link to our game Kingdom Keys can be found here: https://edu.cospaces.io/MJS-DHL
