Twitter Meltdown

https://www.statista.com/statistics/303681/twitter-users-worldwide/

Despite the number of high profile Twitter users who have said that they were going to quit after Elon Musk took over, Twitter ended 2022 with it’s highest numbers. While it is predicted to decrease in number of active monthly users, until the numbers actually come out, there is no way to say for sure. The fact that nearly 8 in 10 Americans get their news from social media, doesn’t indicate to me that there is a likely reduction in users on its way.

Culturally, I think that Twitter and other social media have decreased our attention spans, like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. This links beautifully to the micro- and nano-learning outlined in a previous post (by johannes dirk wielenga on January 27, 2021).

Great statistics, thank you, Catriona! Personally, I am glad social media are losing their attractiveness. They are still useful for real-life actions, but less so for “mindless time-killing usage”, thank God.
