Art In The Age Of Social Media

Many people state that social media is a new form of storytelling and can even be regarded as an artistic expression because individuals are expressing their humanity. Social media platforms like Instagram are built to let you socially engage with the art of the people you follow. Everyone has the ability to tell a story, share inspirations and showcase their personality. However, this being said what makes something art? Does social media cheapen the experience of art? Is it stealing to share someone’s artwork?

    Hi Michael,

Your post is of interest to me as we make mention of using video primary as means of education in outreach on our week 8 OER. Here’s the link to the infographic on outreach pivot to online: https://view.genial.ly/603004207861fc0d224564bc. The sharing of videos, still images and visitor experiences was a means for museums to stay “open”.

I consider the pivot of museums and other cultural institutions towards online interactions as a benefit for the curator and the audience. The online version of any work of art could be taken as a teaser- to motivate people to visit the authentic version. I have also observed this in visitors to places they read about in books. The TED talk speaker Ms.Fei mentions this same occurence at museums.

“Fear not” is a great message. There is great power in the functions available on mobile devices. There is an inevitable spread via digitalization due to the incredible technological advances in mobile devices. The choice to embrace this technology, and to use it to engage the next generations of art-lovers and museum visitors would deepen the ties of our cultural heritage and the institutions that house these works.

The Getty Museum set up a challenge on their instagram to reproduce an art piece with readily available objects during vivid confinement.

This challenge brought an overwhelming number of submissions of a myriad of artworks. If anything, bit made me more curious to see and learn more! I hope that it would be the same for other visitors to the museum’s social media sites.

I would like to ask the question: What socia media experience has enticed you to learn more about a curated object or a museum?
