Why and how will this app relevant or useful?
- Core Competencies– which is part of British Columbia’s K-12 curriculum and assessment system
The Core Competencies are essential in the BC curriculum and it is important that not only teachers who should be familiar with the system, but students and parents should become more familiar with it. Having an app for Core Competencies will allow more knowledge for parents who are the primary caregivers. Students who have devices can also use this app to track their learning. This will provide more independence and ultimately provide success in learning. - Teachers currently do not have a mobile option tool to access goals
At this time and day, teacher do not have a specific program or app that allows teachers to click a few button to have access to goals. Most teachers refer back to the hard copy or through MyEd ( which is then downloaded into a pdf). An app that contained minimal student information, a checklist that shows which goals to work on by term, and a section to add comments would be likely be used and preferred. - Keep data long term
Student’s goals may change throughout the years. Currently teachers have to flip through an IEP, (which is minimally 3 pages long and can be longer) and make separate notes on the successes and the stretches. The act of flipping through pages is very time consuming and not to mention it’s not eco-friendly. If data can be collected and if it can be visibly presented for teachers and parents to see, then it would be easier to understand, assess and make comments for future goals. - Keep student accountable
By using this app, it can hold student accountable for their learning. As Yan et al. (2019) shares that, ” Student self-assessment is one of the core skills of self-regulated learning and lifelong learning.” Whether or not the student is on an IEP or not, with easy access of goals, wherever they are, can make an impact on learning. If a mobile app is available for students who can be more involved in their learning, “effective learning can only occur when students have a realistic sense of their own performance so that they can direct their further learning on the critical aspects of their learning needs” (Yan et al., 2019)
