From Stages to the rise of Cinema

what is the effect of stages and early cinema on orality and literacy? Apparently, it took a long time for the transformation of orality into literacy. At the beginning, stages were a place to worship god, then to follow religion and churches, where the audiences were the general population but the effect on modernization was limited and directed by the authorities’ power.  The stories were based on old Gods, Jesus Christ, churches and miracles even though it was based on storytelling and drama. The good point was introduced when the Latin language of the Bible that the stories were based on were translated to other languages so that the population could understand. Later, when the theatres transformed in to a place of fun and arts only the high classes of society were able to attend. Those already educated were able to attend, enjoy and develop their skills. However, it took till the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century for the real spread of literacy to happen. That was because of the invention of the electricity, and the clustering of the people in bigger cities and the social interaction between them. The differences between people starts to melt and the schools instructional technology starts to erupt. The rise of the cinema which is the continuation of the stages definitely has embraced the rise of literacy to new boundaries.

Here is the Video.

Enjoy!

  1. Hi Bassam,

You video came up as private and I could not view it. You may just need to change a setting! 🙂

    • Hi Bassam,

What an interesting subject! I didn’t know about the medieval miracle plays, I found it fascinating to learn about the bridge between Greek drama and renaissance plays. I find it interesting to compare older movies to new releases. Older movies have a lot more talking, much more like a play, whereas newer films rely a lot more on cinegraphic features.
