Cologne for the Day

Today we are off to Cologne for the day! It’s only 3 hours from Amsterdam so we figured we might as well take a little detour to Deutschland.

The train stopped right in the centre of the city. As soon as we got out of the station we walked straight to the Cathedral. It was stunning! Its spire makes it the 3rd tallest in the whole world and the city centre I must assume has building hight restrictions, so you can literally see the Cathedral from anywhere you are!

We walked towards city hall and saw that there was some sort of crowd around it, naturally we just thought it was tourist groups, but when we got there we walked into a wedding ceremony! I can cross of crashing a wedding from my bucket list now :)

When looking up Cologne I saw that there is a fountain where instead of water is Cologne! I’m happy to report that this is indeed true! The 4711 building where the famous fragrance was created has a fountain with Cologne. Another thing that was super interesting is that upstairs there was a little exhibition of all their bottles and promotional materials since they started the company in 1799!

We mostly just walked throughout the city and ended up along the Rhine Promenade. This is where everyone was noting the sunshine and their vacation weekend! We strolled along the riverside and made our way back to catch the train.

We got back in Amsterdam late in the evening and decided that we should see the city at night. When we went to The Red Light District early during our stay it was during the day. Let me tell you that it is a completely different place on a Friday night! Swarms of people everywhere, surprisingly there was Many tourists and elderly couples and of course everyone else in between! We made the mistake of walking down a busy alley, took about about 20 minutes to go half a block from the amount of people there was! Thankfully I’m not claustrophobic! Don’t worry we made it back to our place safe and sound.
